that's odd- there's nothing tight about the right knee area for me in my jetta tdi... and i thought it was built the same way as the regular jetta's? i dont see how anyone- even very tall would have a lack of leg room- it's very spacious. is the jetta built differently than the jetta tdi?

well, if you look at the right edge of the bottom seat cushion, and extend that edge to where the center console is, you will see that it runs NOT into the left edge of the console, but the console itself. thus the right knee tends to rest up against the console, unless the seat is back far enough.

also, when shifting gears, it doesnt feel as silky smooth as I thought a german car should feel...sometimes it feels more friction going into from 1st to 2nd gear. wonder if it'll get better after driving it for a few months.

Great to know, dieseldan9! I've been out test driving a bunch of different cars in the past week (what is with the dashboard in the new Honda Civics!?! Hideous!), and have definitely decided on a Jetta S. The best quote I got was $16990 (plus taxes and fees).

2009JettS,
is your $16600 OTD with taxes and fees? I guess my question is what is the definition of out the door? Thanks.

Wow, that's fantastic! What was the price before taxes and fees?

Quoted $19664 out the door price for a 2009 Jetta S auto by katie27

I did my negotiation through emails.
I am in the state of Indiana. The first dealer gave me invoice price which comes to $20340 out the door, and would not go below that. The second dealer is in Chicago which is 120 miles away and gave me $19580 out the door but she mis-calculated Indiana sales tax. Emailed this offer to a couple of other dealers. One totally pissed off and said this offer was impossible. The other, which is my local dealer, matched the selling price and with real indiana tax, it comes to $19664. The problem is that they do not have the base model that I want and need to get it from somewhere else.
The question is whether I am getting a good deal. Since there was a dealer who got pissed off by the price, maybe the deal is good. But Danny's quote from post #512 is much better than mine. Is Janurary not a good time to buy?

That sounds like a lot, katie27. I'm in Boston, and the lowest total I got (with all taxes and fees) for a 2009 Jetta S automatic was $18,200 (base price for car = $16,900), which I did not take. I'm still shopping around for a lower price. What's the sales tax in Indiana? It's 5% in MA.
