should I buy the SE or the SEL? at what price? by pmpkin123

Hi, am in the DFW Texas area, but willing to travel.

First, any idea of whether the bump from SE to SEL is worth it? My daughter will be buying her first VW (automatic of course, with Ipod adaptor, OF COURSE)

She likes the leatherette, and would prefer power seats, but not a huge deal. Sun roof is just okay with her.

Any dealerships I should point towards as being no hassle & honest? Any price I might be able to shoot for?

Thanks

VW North Scottsdale (AZ) is great. ask for warren.

bought SE - great deal!
MDI nav system has AUX to hook up iPod, and USB drive, great set up and better options versus straight iPod adapter. great deal and so pleasant to deal with. no hassle. they'll give you best price right at the beginning.

good luck!

Jetta TDI - full MSRP plus "Market Adjustment"? by ryandk

Grrr... Are all car dealerships adding on to the MSRP for the Jetta TDI?

The dealership in Bellingham, WA wants full MSRP plus $1500 "market adjustment".

Here's an e-mail I received when I asked about the market adjustment. What a load of bullshit.

Market adjustment is an amount we add onto the MSRP and we do this because the TDI's are in high demand and limited supply. Other dealers are marking up their TDI's from $2k to $4+ above MSRP. The TDI's hold their value extremely well. Prime example is my customer who was on our waiting list for 1 year for a 2009 Jetta Wagon TDI. He was the first one on the list and bought our first Jetta Wagon TDI, manual transmission. After 2 weeks of owning it he decided he really had to have an automatic so his daughter could drive it too. He traded it in for what he paid (MSRP + $1,500) and we turned around and sold it again for even more. It was on the lot for 1 week.

Are you interested in our 2009 Jetta TDI Sedan? Would you like to come in to see it?

I want to be polite but these dealers are a bunch of (_fill in with your own expletive!_) crooks. And the whole thing about "other dealers" is another line of crap... aren't you lucky this guy is only going to rip you off for $1500!

Just be patient - it's supply and demand and VW dealers are in the sweet spot (unlike most other dealers) with the TDI. But eventually, supply will catch up with demand and "Market Adjustment" will be a thing of the past.

Good luck!

I have found at least two dealers in our area [Portland OR] that are selling the TDI sedans at MSRP. Every dealer here has multiple sedans on the lot. With that in mind, I would never pay more than MSRP for a TDI sedan.

I too have heard many anecdotal accounts of dealer pricing in Seattle. Use the VW website to explore dealer alternatives up and down the West Coast. You will not have any trouble finding someone who will sell you a Jetta TDI sedan at MSRP.

The wagon is another story - too much demand, too little production.

Reasonable price for a 2009 Jetta S by BilKop

Hi all!
I am planning to buy my first car at the end of the month and was wondering if anyone has any idea of how much one can reasonably negotiate the price? I was quoted (by email) a price of $19,000 for a 2009 Jetta S w auto transmission, "cold weather package" and iPod hookup. Do you think I can get them down to $15,000 or would that just be laughable (and perhaps rude)?

Very well. What would you think would be a reasonable price? And what do you base that on?

Based on Edmund's pricing, 2.5S Jetta Auto (without the package, I don't have those numbers in front of me), at MSRP with destination is $19,090, and $18,445 invoice.

Offering $15,000 is $3,500 below invoice, which would most likely get you laughed/thrown out of the dealership.

I would personally try to negotiate by offering something that's invoice or invoice - 1000 and go from there. I am also in the market to lease a 09 Jetta S manual, and would be interested in seeing what others are able to get (in terms of amount below invoice).

Thanks,

atenb
