if you got them down to around 17k as a base price, as opposed to 17651, that should be pretty good...not sure about the rest of those fees. I know they vary from state to state

I never talked OTD price when negotiating. I know a lot of people on the boards have recommended doing that but I didn't really have a lot of success with that method. In the end I just figured out what I wanted to pay OTD as the tax, registration, etc. should all be standard amounts. I then just decided if the dealer fees were over a certain amount I wouldn't purchase the car.

If you see some unusual fees in there you always have the option to walk away and check with another dealership (sometimes even the threat of leaving will make them take the fees off). Like I said, during the whole process I checked a good amount of dealers in the area to make sure the price was on target. The morning of I called a few dealerships to say I was looking to buy the car that day and could they go any lower. Most said this was a great deal and they could not beat it so I went ahead with it.

And yes this was the base value edition (not base 2.5). I wasn't interested in getting any additional options so that one made more sense since I was more concerned with the price and you aren't losing many features by going with the value edition.

Base MSRP (no options) is the same coast to coast...Options cost also the same...obviously some have more, Automatic v. Manual, for example.

Your listing of Fees is confusing, could you repost with more clarity...No abbreviations.

Is it?? the base jetta auto I already saw at one car dealer is MSRP $ 18390.00 auto, another one is listed 17565 (2.5L 6AT) and another is $18205 (5Cyl/2.5L)is there differences between these cars? as for the fees, I wrote them exactly as it shows on the paper given to me, I know the tax(1115.63) and Tag/title (95.30) and the vin etch (199.00) he said that one is already on the window so I have to pay for it, but I don't know the other two: the documents fee of (50)and the non tax fees (71.38). and two dealers said they will sell me a used car for 17000 ( one have 14k on it and the other have 20k). this is the first time I buy a car by myself, ands it's stressing..

i'm guessing auto......at that price yuo might be pushing..assuming a base purchase price of 17k..then taxes which will vary depending on state...plus tags and title..and then the extra for the wheels

they might have added on extra items to the car, but the MSRP should be the same...as for those fees...vin etch(199.00) is completely stupid...i know dealers that don't do that, and there is no way it's worth 200 for that...it's a dealer add on, that the car doesn't come with standard. I feel bad because it seems like they are trying to take you for a quick buck.

i would stay away from the used cars.....they don't seem like a good deal at all from what you've said

Yeah, it all depends on preference. I really don't care if the dealer has a $500 add on fee for example, if I'm getting $500 off the price of the car. That's why I do OTD, and just tell the dealers, make the numbers work however you want. This is my price. Hasn't given me any trouble at all. And we haven't had to shop around, just go into the local dealership, make it clear we will buy today if they met the price, and it was done.

You need to check out the number at the top of the sticker where it say "Base Price" the number at the bottom includes the options on the car as well as Destination Charge.

There is a "Base Model" & the 2.5L...They are priced differently.

Do not pay for the "Etch". The VIN is stamped into the car at different points around 20+/- times. It does not matter if it is etched or not...Do not pay for it.

I do not know what the other $71.38 in fees is for, but it is just $71 bucks...Do get an explaination though.

And stay with the new cars and not the "Used".

Finally, if you like the car, and if they have a few of them...Go back after work on the 30th...5:30/6:00PM You will be amazed how the situation will change...They should be more than helpful...And go with a comfort level that if you can make the numbers work you will drive home in a new car...nothing inspires a dealer to sharpen his pencil more than a committed customer on the last day of the month.
