Can one really buy under invoice? by sport12

I called a dealer and offered to buy a Jetta Wolfsburg for 10% under sticker price (which equates to about $1000 under invoice). They told me they would be losing money. Others have posted on this board that they get this deal. Please explain how a dealer could make such a sale.

Thank you so much. I contacted a dealer via e-mail told him I will pay cash OTD $17.000 for a 2007 base Jetta. and this was his response : "Impossible to do...These cars invoice for $18,006....With no incentives on the car, it makes it impossible to buy for $17000 + ttl, that more impossible and unrealistic at $17000 otd..Where did you get $17000 from?"
Is that possible, or is he just jerking me around because I am a woman? that base jetta is listed on edmunds at MSRP $17.565 and invoice $16.959. should I stick to this price and look somewhere else or should I raise the price? thanks

Edmunds clearly indicates the "Destination" charges are not included in their pricing...I have never understood that because 'destination charges' are the same coast to coast for each manufacturer...Some will be more; some will be less, but Destination on a Jetta will be the same in Maine or Arizona.

The items that Edmunds also does not include are such things as Regional Advertising Fees and Port Preperation.
These fees are part of what the Dealer pays for the car. The
reason for the deletion of the Ad Fees is due to the fact that these numbers do vary geographically...as Edmunds so states.

Edmunds has been very thorough about posting incentives over the years; so if none are posted, they do not exist.

It sounds like the dealer that you contacted via email was rather forthcoming and candid. Try going back and finding some common ground...Negotiation is compromise. Each side must find some benefit.

Edmunds includes the destination charge.. if you go ahead and navigate to the next page..

Though, I agree... the price on the first page should have the price, including destination.. Mildly irritating..

I recently purchased a 2007 base Jetta (w/automatic transmission)...no additional options. This was in the Boston area. The OTD price was $18560. To break it down, the car was $17400 ($16760 + $640 destination fee), plus state tax ($870), plus title/registration/inspection ($115), plus the documentation fee ($175) = $18560.

I contacted about 7 or 8 dealerships in the area and no other dealership would match that price (most would go as low as $17500+tax+fees, etc.). Since this is the beginning of the month, I would imagine you may be able to do a little better towards the end of the month but I'm not sure if you can do as well as $17000 OTD (although I think you might be talking manual so you may be able to get manual for that price).

Also, Edmunds was right on with the MSRP of this car, which was $18205, so if the dealer is telling you the MSRP of the car is more than what you see on Edmunds the car may have some add ons (floor mats, spoiler, etc.), so you may want to confirm that if these aren't things that you need.

As far as rebates, I've been searching this car for a few months and I don't think the 2007s have ever had any cash rebates (I've only seen some low financing options, which I was told aren't offered with the base model). I think the 2006s used to have a $3000 rebate but I think that offer may be over now?

yeah..i would think a price of 16k-16.2k plus TTL would be a good deal assuming an MSRP of 17,565 as you stated. Were you looking at a manual or auto? Also the OTD price would depend on the state tax %. But I think 17k roughly should be a good deal, maybe 17.2k MAX. My rule of thumb is to take 10-12% off the MSRP to get a starting price, then add your own tax, title, license, etc to get a good OTD price. The key to be firm.

The base jetta at one dealer auto, MSRP was 18390 discounted to 17651 (internet deal) then they added
VIN 199.00-Doc fee 50.00-tax 1115.00-non tax fees 71.00-T&T 95.00 . the total was 19182.00. is it possible that the MSRP can differ from state to state? (I'm in TX)
would then 17,800 to 18,000 be a good OTD price?( using your formula w/10% off his msrp)

Thank you so much.

ok how did you pull off this deal? I am in Houston and these dealerships dont even want to talk to me when I mention ur OTD price. Did you get the value edition or the base? not the 2.5l.
