I paid $19,439 title, license, and fees (no tax, because I had a trade-in) for a 2006 Mazda 3s Touring 5-door with auto, 6CD and sunroof, wheel locks and dealer vin etching (which I got them to take off the price). I worked hard to get this deal and I hope it was a good one. I live in NY, but I used a high volume dealer in NJ.

z71bill, from discussions with service consultants and techs I know in a couple of VW Service Departments and from conversations with other aftermarket VW modifiers and tuners who have done stints with VW Service Departments, it was a consensus opinion that the reduced fuel efficiency in the manual trannie MK V Jetta TDI compared to the MK IV (46/38 to 41/35) could be traced to several factors, one of which was the switch to 16" wheels/tires as compared to the 15" wheels/tires that were O.E. on the MK IV. Obviously, the increased size and weight of the MK V play a factor, but the wider tire was also pointed to as the culprit. Several tech people suggested an increase in fuel efficiency of 2-3 mpg if there was a return to the narrower 15" tire. Care to weigh in on that judgment ?

I have never reduced tire size. But have put larger wider tires on every truck and most of the cars I have owned.
Normally I only go up 1-2 "sizes" - if I can use that general term. Like going from a 265 70 16 to a 275 70 16 (a little wider & taller) or from a 245 75 16 to a 285 75 16.
I have not seen much change in MPG - even before taking into account that my odometer is off - which in my case means I am actually going more miles than what the odometer says. Once I take that into consideration the difference is so small +/- it could just be the normal variation from tank to tank.
I do know that some people experience a change in MPG just switching from one brand of tire to another - even with the same size - so I guess anything is possible.
I assume you do know that the wheel size has nothing to do with how wide (or the diameter) a tire is?

If you don't mind my asking, does $19,439 include tags and fees? What were the fees? Can you tell me what dealer you used? I am in NY and have been trying to get a similar car. I have, so far, avoided the NJ dealers because they have refused to give me internet price quotes.

Local dealership had to get it from another dealer - said it should be here tomorrow. Really excited about the car. I got the Velocity Red Grand Touring with the Bose/Moonroof package and the Navigation package - paid $21,417 + tax, tag, title.

bad news - went by the dealership this evening to show my wife the color. Sales guy said the dealership they were getting the car from is working a deal on it... my BS meter perked up a bit... they've been great to deal with, but looks like it may be a week or so before I know if they can find a Velocity Red one for me. If not - I'll try to get them to find me a Titanium.

z7Bill, I actually have changed tire brands - even maintaining sizing and got considerable mpg gains. Case in point a Subaru WRX. Took the O.E. Bridgestone Potenza RE 92s off and replaced with ultra- high performance Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. My decision had nothing to do with fuel efficiency, but I got a 3-4 mpg gain and was flabbergasted. On my Mazda 3i I put on high performance Yokohama Avid 205/55 16s and watched the gas needle drop quickly. I returned them on a 30 day trial offer and replaced them with high performance B.F. Goodrich Traction TAs and got 3 mpg better than the Avids. I hear ya on the wheel size and tire width info. I was wondering if the height of the tire plays a factor if I move from a 205/55 16 to a 195/65 15 ?

z7bill, I failed to add that the switch on the Mazda 3i was not only by brand - from Yokohama to B.F. Goodrich - but in size as well. Went from a 205/55 16 to a 195/65 15.
