Moving fast! [widow1] by autonomous

Took delivery late September. Now I'm getting out of the Mazda game. Bought both as a second driver for the wife and I. Have driven the '06 sparingly - have only 2k on the odometer - but love the torquey 2.3 liter though I was not displeased with the 2 liter in the '04. Now my driving needs have changed drastically and I will be doing a lot of traveling. So the Mazda is on the block and I'm replacing it with a fuel sipping VW Jetta TDI.

Wow! Selling within 5 months and 2K miles! Depreciation costs can be staggering (20% to 25% for initial year on compacts). Consumer Reports rated the Mazda3 manual in its top compacts for fuel economy so it's a bit surprising that you mention "fuel sipping VW Jetta TDI" as the reason to move from Mazda. The new Jetta is a very handsome vehicle. Happy trails with the Jetta!

Done it before several times with different vehicles. Depends on how cheap you bought the car you're divulging yourself of and how close a deal you can get on the vehicle you're buying plus the state of the market. Mazda 3 is a high demand car in short supply. I sold the 2004 3i after a year for $14100 and had bought it at $15300. It's sold for 3 years with no incentives, rebates, and special APR. Mazda ran a one month of 0 %/24 month financing in Sept 2004 on all Mazda vehicles so I paid no interest on my loan for the 2004. Would not attempt it on just any vehicle. Had a dealer locate at port a Jetta TDI manual trannie with no option package (a savings of $1500-$2000) and had him dealer trade before the Jetta left port so it comes straight to my dealer with no miles on it. Bought it at $500 over invoice. I also ease the shock to the wallet by doing Dealer Pass Throughs in the sale of my current car to get more for it while still using it for trade-in value to reduce my sales tax load ( the mechanics: get a buyer at my price, sell it to the dealer as a trade for the new car, and have the dealer sell it back to my buyer; an 'in and out" paper shuffle that's quite common today). Consumer Reports tested a Mazda 3i manual - not the 3s I now have. Claimed the 3i got 41 mph. I never got beyond 35 mpg in mine Take the Toyo tires off made especially for that vehicle and aftermarket it and you will not get that. In my 3s I might get 32 mpg highway on occasion. With the Jetta I will remove the now standard 16 " tires and steel wheels on the option packageless TDI and sell them on eBay. Will replace them with 15" tires and up the fuel efficiency 2-3 mpg on top of the already great TDI fuel economy. I also need the trunk space in the Jetta: a cavernous 16 cu. ft. to the Mazda 3s' 11 cu. ft.

Good day, gang.

I was quoted an OTD price of $18750 for a stock, Mazda3 S Touring 5-Door, 5-spd, no additional options in the whitewater pearl color in the Hampton Roads area.

Thoughts on the price? From what I can tell reading this board it may be a pretty good deal.

Anyone else from this part of Virginia get anything near this?

Thanks.
Tom

Why will changing to 15 inch wheels/tires increase your MPG?

I paid $19,439 title, license, and fees (no tax, because I had a trade-in) for a 2006 Mazda 3s Touring 5-door with auto, 6CD and sunroof, wheel locks and dealer vin etching (which I got them to take off the price). I worked hard to get this deal and I hope it was a good one. I live in NY, but I used a high volume dealer in NJ.

z71bill, from discussions with service consultants and techs I know in a couple of VW Service Departments and from conversations with other aftermarket VW modifiers and tuners who have done stints with VW Service Departments, it was a consensus opinion that the reduced fuel efficiency in the manual trannie MK V Jetta TDI compared to the MK IV (46/38 to 41/35) could be traced to several factors, one of which was the switch to 16" wheels/tires as compared to the 15" wheels/tires that were O.E. on the MK IV. Obviously, the increased size and weight of the MK V play a factor, but the wider tire was also pointed to as the culprit. Several tech people suggested an increase in fuel efficiency of 2-3 mpg if there was a return to the narrower 15" tire. Care to weigh in on that judgment ?
