S-Plan, also Boston/Worcester by SnowDog

If you're still "negotiating" after the S-Plan is mentioned, switch dealers. If the dealer supports the S-Plan, there shouldn't be any wiggle room. My dealer showed me the invoice (from Mazda USA) with invoice price, MSRP, and S-Plan price all written down. I was charged exactly what the invoice listed for S-Plan, and no other fees.

There was not an "Ad fee" added on afterwards, nor a "Doc fee." I paid S-Plan price plus tax, inspection sticker fee, registration/etc, but no "special" fees. The invoice did have a $100 "Boston" charge, which could well be the "Ad fee" some people are talking about, but this was A: On the invoice already (clearly the dealer was being charged it) and B: wrapped up in the S-Plan price already (it was not added to the S-Plan price by the dealer).

Note that the S-Plan price is not itemized on the invoice (unlike the invoice price), so if you want the itemized list you should log into the S-Plan site provided by your employer to see how it all breaks down.

The only negotiating I did was with the finance guy, and he was _very_ laid back. He offered me a couple things but his attitude was "I have to offer you this," but it was clear he didn't expect me to want to buy it. Even the extended "warranty" sale pitch was low-pressure. After the sale was done the manager came over to shake my hand and ask that I please fill out the survey when it got there. Absolutely the least painful experience I've had buying a car, new or used.

If you're looking for 3s in the Boston/Worcester area, there were a few on the lot at SentryWest in Shrewsbury, right on Route 20. Good luck!

Thanks for the info on the S-Plan. There has been some misinformation floating around this forum that S Plan is like a rebate and you should negotiate then tell them you have S Plan to get an even deeper discount. I didnt know how it worked so I tried to negotiate and almost didnt buy the car becuase I thought I wasnt getting a good enough deal. And that was at 500 below invoice with S Plan and Graduate program.

I think alot of people are confusing the actual ad fee that is located right on the dealer invoice and an ad fee that is added after the fact by questionable retailers.....to work up a deal and then have the dealer slip in the ad fee is questionable. But if somebody wants to work from invoice up and have each and every cost broken out, then expect to see the legit ad fee, just like the cost figures for auto trans, destination charge, moonroof, etc. OTOH, if the consumer says I will pay $xxxxx for the car, out the door then the ad fee is just part of the dealers cost and the consumer never sees it, but it still is part of the dealers cost structure.

Some of the dealers in my region have stopped doing S-plan on the MZ3 due to lack of availability and high sales demands....This is a car that I would normally stock 30-35 cars in inventory and I cant seem to keep more than 5-7 on the ground...the factory can not replace the cars as fast as we are selling them....especially with 4-5 month order times.

I used carcostcanada DOT com for my last few vehicle purchases. Very good site. I'd recommend them to anyone in Canada shopping for a car. If you opt for their 'premium' membership, they'll actually get offers for you that you can take or leave OR take to your local dealer and ask them to match/beat it if you want.

Hope it helps, good luck shopping!

BTW, I ended up paying $700 over invoice for my 3 in December using the info I got from carcostcanada.

Thanks for the info xtyper pilot--I just happened to find that site just before you posted. I am looking to buy in the fall, so I will probably join then. It sounds like you got a great deal for a Canadian purchase.

The invoice numbers that I got from Edmunds and what the dealer used for invoice amount matched to dollar. Not sure where this imaginary ad fee comes from - but maybe you could tell me how the fee amount is determined. What %? - of invoice or MSRP? I will guess its 2% of base MSRP.

Some dealerships keep their own employees in the dark - they don't want them to know the truth - many are smart enough to figure things out on their own anyway - but others just accept the company line.

Further to what x_typer said, I actually obtained a dealer cost printout from carcostcanada.com. There is only about a $1500 spread between MSRP and dealer invoice for the Mazda 3. Most dealer want/need about $600-700 profit per car, so at this point in time, x_typer's deal is pretty typical of what to expect.

i bought mine last sunday, mazda 3S , moonroof/changer, abs/sidebag option, winning blue color for 17800 , and 500 rebate, adds up less than invoice price.
