So, with that kind of power, can it out-tow a small commercial truck?
Seriously - a very impressive display of, uh, impressiveness!

Yes the Mercedes-Benz CL65....and the soon the S65 Sedan and SL65 Roadster.
I wonder if we'll get all three over here? After BMW debuts their 500hp V10 M5 (Detroit) for the 2005 model year, I wonder if Mercedes will drop the SLR's 616hp version of the supercharged 5.4L V8 in the E55 AMG?

Well, the good news is that on Wednesday, Edmunds.com will add both of these vehicles to our official Future Vehicles listing:
2005 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG 4dr Sedan
2005 Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG 2dr Coupe
So, hopefully we'll get more conversation going when the info is released.

Is it just a coincidence that Mercedes latest infatuation with increasing horsepower to stratospheric levels has only been exceeded by their continuing disregard for basic reliability and quality? Friends of ours got stranded Saturday night in their 4 month old SL55 when the headlights refused to work properly. It will be the 3rd time the vehicle has been rendered inoperable since they paid $120k for it in July.
I am pleased to report that my 2002 M5 with a mere 400 hp has functioned flawlessly for the past 18+ months and 32k miles. And it got them home a lot faster than an SL55 without headlights would have.
I do not think there are more than five non-professional drivers in the entire U.S. that can handle 90% of the capabilities of the M5. I proved myself not to be one of them at BMW's test track. But apparantly AMG thinks there are folks with more money than brains who will buy a 600+ hp S65 or SL65 and spend considerably more time trying to get the damn thing to go from point a to point b without breaking down.
I am a driving enthusiast, for sure. But I find the recent mistaken priorities of Mercedes/AMG insulting to my intelligence (and I was one of the first buyers of the 300SEL 6.3). Enough with the 500, 600, 700+ horsepower wars. Fix the quality/build problems, please.

If I could buy a car close to 150k+ I would buy the Bentley Continental GT. The mighty great Benz has a few more horses but the Bentley is JUST MORE than the Benz could ever be.

I have purchased four AMG vehicles this past year including the SL55 and E55. It is true that these cars have more power than anyone could ever need. I usually have to drive them in the comfort mode which locks out first gear, otherwise the traction control is always at war with the engine. When I turn off the traction control, even starting out in second gear, a full throttle launch creates massive wheelspin. OK, I agree it is all pointless.
And I love it! The E55 is the most satisfying ownership experience I have ever had.
The CL65 does sound a bit ridiculous, maybe if they could just shave a few pounds, they wouldn't have to come up with these huge engines. But don't talk to me about the Bentley- come on- you are buying a Volkswagen with a tarted up interior with less power and more weight than the CL65.
Also, I use to worship at the BMW altar until Chris Bangle arrived.
