Probably the ones that want their police cars on the roads and not in the shop being repaired.

Brits pay $6/gal for gas by phoebeisis

The Brits pay $6/gal or more for gas,so a full sized vehicle that gets~25 mpg instead of 12.5 mpg would make a huge difference.Enough of a difference over a lifetime to make up the $20000 or so difference in cost. With the AWD it is essentially all weather-a concern in a nasty, wet, cold place like GB.My calculations show breakeven at 83000 miles-not very much for a Police vehicle, and Toyotas are know to be durable-there are a lot of 175000 mile Camrys out there.Charlie

I'm from the UK and fuel prices are STILL GOING UP! The sales of 4x4s are still high but over here we dont buy the heavy gas guzzling V8's we buy the 6 cylinder diesels. To fill up a VW Golf 1.6 Litre will cost £50, thats $98. A Nissan Murano 3.5 V6 £85, $154. The BMW X5 3.0 Diesel is said to get 32.8 mpg but the urban figure is more like 24 mpg, but in real terms, a lot lower than that. The thing is though that the UK is not nasty! As you seem to put it. It does rain at times and is not always cold! When it does rain it is not like how it does in Florida! We don't really need 4X4s here its just a trend. The Lexus RX400h has a waiting list! So this means if you go out and order tomorrow you won't get it until at least the end of this year/spring next year. So, you all try running your V8 SUV's over here and then you will know that your gas prices are not high compared to ours! Those big ugly Chevrolets that get 10mpg will empy your pockets and you would all have to start driving small Volkswagens that get 50mpg like a lot of people here do! 1 in 4 UK car buyers now go for a diesel!

as long as we in the US insist on burning fossil fuels, frivalously, at the current level, the Iranians are totally justified in converting to Nuclear power so they can sell all that black gold at inflated prices to the idiots.

James,I was mainly tongue in cheek about cold ,wet GB;however in every TV show or movie we see about England(like the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies or the Jeremy Brett series) rain, fog and visible breath seem everpresent.I would guess that it actually rains more in New Orleans than most of England.
What is your current price per liter for "regular"-the cheapest gasoline?Diesel??
Today regular(87 octane) was $2.44 here in New Orleans near me.Diesel was $2.55 Premium(92 octane) was 2.64.
We currently have very few diesel engines in cars. This is supposed to change dramatically in 2007 when new regs force "cleaner low sulphur diesel' to be produced. One or 2 Volks. and maybe a MB or 2 are about it for diesel cars.During and just after the 1979 oil embargo we had all sort of Diesel cars-Corolla ,Volks,Peugeot, lots of small toyota and Nissan diesel trucks and worst of all an absolute POS Cadillac Diesel.
The main diesels now are large diesel pickups with 6 liter 6cyl and V-8 motors-not really economy vehicles-they weigh about 6000+lbs.
Oh well, let us know what you are paying per liter-we will do the arithmeticX3.76).Thanks.Charlie

Since we don't get many overseas price reports, you might want to post the UK prices over in the Report Your Local Gas Prices Here discussion!

Great Britain's climate is a hell of a lot warmer in the winter time than say Boston or even New York. This is inspite of the fact that London is MUCH further north than Boston. This is due to the fact that there is a relatively warm ocean to the west plus the Gulf Stream affecting western Europe. The air masses for Boston and New York in the winter often move in from frigid Canada.

.93 pence/L=$1.63/L OR $6.30/GALLON by phoebeisis

$6.30 A GALLON-a bit more than 2X what we pay.Yes,those sort of prices would absolutely put paid to 5000 lb pickups and SUV's.Currently the almost tripling of the price of gasoline(-I paid 89 cents in 1998) has finally started to kill the sales of Suburbans and Expeditions( 2500 KG SUV's-5500 lbs-which get 10 mpg in city driving). It was only the last 40 cents of the runup that finally "killed" them.GM has managed to sell them-but only at HUGE DISCOUNTS-probably under GM's actual cost.
GB is fairly far north, but not bitterly cold because of warm ocean currents(between 50 and 60 degrees north). The lower 48 states only extend up to about 48 degrees north. I'm exactly 30 degrees north-New Orleans-that explains our barely winter-winter(one or 2 days below 32 degrees).
 Thanks for the" Petrol "numbers.Charlie
