Need probable causes of codes P0700 and P0715 by newbuyerntx

I have a 1997 Honda Civic sedan with an automatic transmission. It has 73K miles on it. My car is having trouble accelerating after stopping at a stop sign or a traffic light. Once the spedometer gets over 20mph, the car is off and running. But during that 0-20 mph range, the car struggles and I repeatedly have to tap the accelerator and encourage it to keep going. It's very unnerving and often I'm afraid it won't even go. I've taken it to three places, but no one can tell me definitively what is wrong without me paying $200-$300 to do so. The check engine light is on, and stays on. Most recently I was given the following two codes: P0700 - "The PCM has received a signal to turn on the "malfunction indicator lamp" from the transmission control system. P0715 - "The PCM has determined that a malfunction exists in the input circuit for the turbine speed sensor."

The place that gave me the codes could not tell me what they meant. I plan to take my car in today to some transmission specialists. I want to go in there armed with some information. I don't want to get taken advantage of. Can anyone give me some advice on what these codes typically mean so I can make sure I'm being told the truth? I would really appreciate it!!

Thanks a million!

The turbine sensor measures the rpm of the torque convertor output and the tcu compares engine rpm with turbine sensor rpm to determine the slip % of the TC.
They usual fail or leak or have a bad connection at the connector/plug.

How often have you flushed or changed the ATF, cleaned the pan, etc......not often or never I bet!

You are right. I have never done this. I always take my car in for the regularly scheduled maintenance. If this is not part of the regularly scheduled maintentance, then it is not being done. Is it hopeless?

depends on how you get to the sensor by swschrad

if the sensor is a nice, easy to reach bolt on, it's not a major deal. if it's internal with seals, it might require removal of the tranny or torque converter. if the sensor is good, but the torque converter is flawed, the price goes up further.

you should discuss this with a transmission specialist that has a good rep in your town and determine what is usually the cause in your vehicle, get an estimate, and go on from there.

one of the online mechanics may know and post further.

if you can identify the sensor's connection plug, it can't hurt to clean the contacts on the "pin" part of the connector pair, then connect and disconnect a couple times to clean the "socket" side, then lightly grease with silicone dielectric, including the seal ring, and put it back together.

notice, warning, etc... unless you know EXACTLY what will happen in all cases, unplugging and replugging connections is > NEVER < to be done on a running vehicle. never, ever. so do it with wheels blocked and all sets of keys in your pocket. if there is an auto-starter, disconnect it or the battery.
