I'm a big fan of Audi. I am hoping for the 3 door A3 to be here soon. I know the 5 door is coming first but that isnt the Hot hatch the 3 door is. If your listening Audi, do us right here in the states, give us your wonderful A3 hatch.

I'm wondering if they're thinking that bringing the 3 door over here would cut into GTi sales. Perhaps they'll market the 5 door as a GTi for people who need more doors (like me.)

#4 of 2296 3-doors just don't sell well in the US...... by andys120

younger buyers like them cuz they don't have multiple cars so the GTI does OK but the more expensive Audi hatch would probably bust thru the price ceiling for hatches. Saab abandoned it's 3-door model a few years back.

Europeans of course don't have such silly prejudices but they too don't have mulitple cars for the most part.

I know most Americans are bigger is better people which is something I have yet to understand. I grew up riding in the back of my dad's R 17 and my mom's VW 411 and missed the whole Vista cruzer thing. Oh and no matter what anyone says I believe GM was the reason Saab moved away from the three door. If you will look at Saab's history they have made sedans also. My parents had a Saab 99 that was a sedan. But back to the A3. It is a great car. I hope the company can over look the US markets short mindedness and offer the 3 door to the few that love to drive these types of cars.

I saw an Audi A3 today in a parking garage in Cincinnati! Is it even on sale yet? I guess so, at least for this person!

It's not a silly prejudice, it's selecting greater practicality over less in the same car. Between a three door GTI and a five door A3, I know where I'd slap my money down.

#8 of 2296 Is A3 (heavily) based on the Golf/Jetta platform? by asafonov

If that's true - please confirm or disagree - I wonder how many people would pay a hefty premium over the already-expensive VW offerings for perhaps little more than a 4-circle badge. Oh wait, that's what many of us do with brand-engineered cars. Getting a A4/A6 inspired Passat for 2/3 of the price of an Audi is another thing...

I drove a rental A3 in Switzerland in the winter of 99, got a free upgrade from a cheaper Renault, don't remember why. Handled great, with 3 not-so-small people and some luggage. But still, priced at, extrapolating from Golfetta and A4 costs, 25-30k USD? Not a great bargain...

the A3 5-door will have to sell for no more than $26/27....any more and you're in A4 Avant 1.8T territory. The A3 is no bargain in Europe and it won't be here.

#10 of 2296 the A3... by vikd

...will only work, if at all, in 3 door config. It would have to truly be the entry level veh for Audi. Peoeple looking for 5 dr utility would look to cheaper, roomier offerings while people looking for a sporty hatch with a certain amount of cache may snag it up...they already do in GTI form; the GTI being the most substantial, in performance and relative refinement/lux, on the market now. I know that if the A3 was available when I purchased my GTI, I would have bought it then. I'd like one now but for the fact that the hatch is cramping my fatherhood responsibilities already...
