Took my brand new '03 W8 to the dealer for the 5K service in the morning. Dealer did the coil recall also. Drove back to work (less than 3 mi). Started the car at lunch time. Strong vibration. Went back to the dealer. While sitting in the service line w/engine off, it started smoking. Service manager brought out the fire extinguisher. He claimed that the new coil was faulty. Although it was "fixed" in 2 days, can't help but feeling have "damaged" goods. Other annoyances - OAT always read high (5 to 10 deg. F)even after replacing the sensor. Soft noise (sounds like fan resonant) coming from the right rear wheel well after about 20 mins. of driving (esp. in a warm day) that would last for about 30 mins. Was told that it could be the fuel pressure release valve but that should stop in 20 sec. The mechanic heard it but had no clue what it was. |

ain't an emergency yet. my exploder reads 5 to 10 degrees high all the time on the OAT, I just make the mental correction. nobody's car is accurate on the OAT all the time, and many are laughable. on the coils, if you are truly worried about the next failure, if and when, get a third-party coil and stash it in a baggie in the trunk. carrying parts is a sure way to guarantee you'll never have to replace them |
|
| I have 2 more cars besides the W8 that give out OAT readings. Only my Mazda Miata does not. The '99 M-B ML320 and '92 Subaru SVX both have very accurate readings. They always match the radio reports and the banks displays. | |

How could an OAT match the radio reports when the road heat/exhaust heat from vehicles in front adds [4-10F] to OAT and radio stations measure temperature inside special wooden protective ventilated boxes in the shade at 10F above the ground [grass]per NOAA recomendations.????????? Guess you could miscalibrate the OAT so it reads wrong! |
|
| One would incline to think that the engine heat would increase the OAT reading but what I have observed was that the reading did not change when I started the car cold to the engine got warm. And since my other 2 cars give out reasonably good readings, I think it is possible to shield or compensate all the other artificial heat sources from the sensor. Or am I just lucky with the other 2 cars and they are exceptions rather than the rules. | |
| I am not completely certain what the abbreviation OAT means, but if this is Outside Air Temperature, then I have noticed nearly the same thing with my 03W8 (tip/sport pkg). Actually, the temperature reading seems pretty close to the ambient temperature right when starting up. Within a few minutes, however, its reading is 5-10 degrees higher. I assume the sensor must be seated too close to the engine block; it can't be picking up that temp from the road (they are cold here too, now). | |

| My 2002 W8 has 6,600 miles now and has been in the shop at least 4 times now. Had the coils replaces with no issues yet and some kind of steering sensor was click under the dash. My current problem is a dash board that makes a noise every time I make a turn to the left then back to the right somewhere around the center air vents or passenger air bag. In addition to the dashboard noise the brakes have started to feel strange when applied above 40 MPH. Feels like the brake rotors are warped - getting a vibration. I have had several other cars with 70,000+ miles and I have never had brakes feel like this. I usually only drive 4 miles round trip to work. Sorry for all the bad news - other than all the issue I still love the car. The power is great. Anyone have a rear wing installed on their W8? | |
| my explorer rises about that much, the Outside Air Temp sensor is located too close to the radiator in the air intake box, and I think that's what the situation is. | |
