Thanks for the tip Sylvia!
I called Toyota customer service today. Result:
-they will 'suggest' to the dealer to use all their resources to find a vehicle in timely fashion.
-they will refund $500 to me upon a copy of my bill of sale at delivery, up to one year, for being a loyal Toyota buyer!!
Now that's a great company policy.
The dealer has offered no perks.

Just saw a new Prius... by beach15

...this morning I was parking my Cadillac in the school parking lot, and when I looked up, a relatively dirty maroon colored 2004 Prius was pulling in. This is the new model, mind you, and it was a student here at school. I'm not sure where or when they bought it, but it really looked kind of cool, especially the beige interior.

Kind of weird that I've already seen this car, considering we leave in the second smallest state, Delaware. There isn't even any dealer close to here, except for about 45 minutes away. Should these cars already be out?

I wandered into a dealer on 10/23 to see if they had any stock I could try on for size. They did. I then asked when I could get on. The dealer said it had an unallocated model coming in 3-5 weeks. The color was acceptable and it had the minimal packages we wanted, so I took it. I am taking delivery tomorrow on 11/1.

Which Portland Dealer? by lwdupont

Hi alnvilma,

Which dealer were you dealing with in Portland? I went to two on Sunday to test drive a Prius, had a bad experience at one, and an ok one at the one in Beaverton.

I'd be curious as to which to avoid.

Back around 101603 I inquired at Lums Toyota in Astoria, Oregon on the Prius 04.
They had one in stock for sale, white with gray interior with curtain airbags and
rear wiper.

I asked if this was for sale. He responded yes. So it was not a demonstrator or
factory demo car. The price was about 23,000 if I recall.
So they are out there.

Hi - I changed the name of the dicsussion to make it the "Prices Paid and Buying Experiences" since a large part of taking delivery will also be how you made your purchase and the details. We will be moving the discussion over to the Smart Shopper sub-folder "What Did You Pay" in the next few days.

Availability - Northeast vs. Southeast by poppop3

I placed an order for a 2004 Prius in mid-October with a Fairfield County CT dealer. Yesterday I spoke with the salesman, who said that I was 15th on their order list and they anticipated getting 1 or 2 a month starting this month. And only two option packages - everything or almost nothing. When I go online to buyatoyota.com for Ft. Lauderdale, where my daughter lives, the availability list goes on for pages, with lots of different option packages. I could cancel my CT order, order the car in Florida and ask her to drive it north, and maybe I'd even have some bargaining power on price. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether this makes sense? And why is there such a demand - supply imbalance?

That's interesting, but I've just used the inventory searcher to check Denver for any Prius's that may be available, and... it lists Prius's as available that I *know* are sold, in fact, I was working with the biggest dealership in Denver, and all Prius's in Denver are sold already through the rest of the year. The salesman advised me if I want one I should put down a non-refundable deposit now and I would get one first quarter of next year. Needless to say I didn't....Hmm, if Florida really has a lot of 'em, I could fly to Florida, and drive a new one back, heck, driving would be cheaper than flying, in a Prius

I just placed the order Friday night at a dealership in Illinois about 20 miles from St. Louis, MO. He said I should expect delivery before the end of the year with best case being 5-6 weeks. A St. Louis dealer I spoke with was unable to deliver before next year. I got the impression from the conversations that there is an allocation system that is spreading the cars out among the dealers. If true, the lower volume dealers would have quicker delivery options.

I shopped around among 4 or 5 dealers in the St. Louis / Metro East Illinois area and my best price was retail with 3 years of free oil changes ($300 value). Demand pretty much eliminated discounts among dealers in this area since I informed them that best price would receive the order.
