Here's my take on it from experience:

I don't really think anyone is being "blinded" by HID headlights. I believe it is just people and their perceptions and prejudice against change that has created all of the flack against HIDs. What happens is the HID lights are "different" and therefore noticable. People look at them because they notice the difference. Well, looking into a light source, even from a distance, can give a perception of being blinded. And the one post about halogens is absolutely correct. My step father - a very strong skeptic of autmotive change - used to constantly complain of being "blinded" when the Halogen lights started becoming popular. What did I tell him? "Don't look at them!"

MidCow - I can't believe you would make a statement like you did about adaptive headlights being introduced in the '40s. Did you really now know that "adaptive" headlights were introduced in the 1948 Tucker. The Tucker had two conventional headlights and one "cyclops" headlight in the middle of the grill that swiveled in tune with the steering wheel. Tucker produced 51 of these "cars of the future", of which 47 are known to still exist. 20 years later, Citroen used a similar, although less advanced and manual system, on their DS.

gagrpice,

Okay you were right. mea culpa. The Tucker "cyclops eye" sounds like it was a pretty futuristic car when it existed.

Did you also note that it accelerated 0-60 mph in 10 seconds. Wow! That's faster than a 2005 Prius.

YMMV,

I have had my 05 Prius for about a week and I have noticed a very annoying rattle that seems to be coming from the windshield or the dash next to the windshield, I will be taking it in next week to see if can be eliminated, I am just wondering if anyone has encountered this problem with their prius. I really like this car and I hope it can be taken care of otherwise I have no choice but to to get rid of this car.

Welcome to the forum. You may get better response on your rattle problem in the "Prius problems and solutions" forum. I'm with you. If I have a rattle in a new car or a 10 year old car, I find it or get rid of it. Rattles in a car drive me crazy.

I can't believe that you say it's based on "perception & prejudice." Come on! After having lost vision temporarily due to those lights at night, I can definately tell you that my perception was that I was BLINDED and NOW I am indeed prejudice! Whomever was behind the wheel didn't have auto adust, the auto ajust doesn't work as you describe, or they should indeed be outlawed, as many do advocate!

Prius's are out there....I live in rural GA and went to the Atlanta area to buy a Prius last Friday. The largest dealer in ATL didn't have one on his lot to show OR test drive. He said that he would have one on Mar.16th (2005), but it was on a first-come, first-serve basis and it would be sold minutes after it came off of the truck, if not before.

We then called a couple of Toyota in somewhat more rural towns, and discovered that they each had two Prius's sitting on the lot without buyers. Admittedly they were selling fast, but both dealers indicated that the urban dealers receive a much higher demand, from people with larger (urban-scale) incomes, and they sell immediately.

We wanted Metallic Silver with leather seats and package #6 which were both on the car we bought. There were no upcharges, everything was at MSRP, and it was a painless and easy experience. The leather package (gray and burgundy) came to $1,298.00, by the way.

If you are encountering long waits, you might try polling some of the smaller dealers in the more remote areas of your state (or surrounding states)to see what they have.

This is one great automobile!

Side airbags are not standard on the 2004 or 2005 Prius. They were added on the higher priced packages. Not sure at what level you got them on the 04' Prius. My advice get the highest level Prius with the NAV. It will be the one that holds it's value the best at trade-in. They are getting more plentiful and many dealers have them available today with no wait. SHOP around...
