Ok, our long wait is finally approaching its end (or, so we hope!) after more than 4 months.   Now, the dealer and Toyota are informing us that the cars come with floor and cargo mats as default options, to be installed at the port-of-entry (Long Beach, CA). Of course, we'd been insisting that we did not want floor & cargo mats. The Prius web site indicates that mats are extra accessories (approximately $180). Both, the dealer and Toyota don't know if we will be charged extra though.   Have others had the same experience too? Replies to this message: backy (Apr 12, 2004 7:13 pm)

Unfortunately I also had to take the car and cargo mats for $180. I didn't have a choice to refuse them. I told them that I didn't want them and since they don't have any Prius on the lot to put the mats into, I had to take them. With the demand so strong for this car, I'm afraid at most dealerships, it is take it or leave it.

The carpets on the Prius are pretty light colored, especially in ivory. Won't take much to get them dirty, tar-spotted etc. You're spending over $20k on your new Prius, what's $184 on some mats that look nice, fit perfectly, are easy to clean (compared to the carpet), and protect the carpeting too?   If you are persistent, you might get the dealer to "throw them in." But on a car as popular as the Prius, I kind of doubt it.

The story is that a real Order was never really placed for My Car with the factory. Ordering in Toyota-speak means securing a place in line to select whatever the local sales region is shipping. Since I ordered my Prius from a dealer in the New York sales region which has been delivering only Models #6 & 9 for months with no change in sight, that is my choice. Yes, inter regional swaps are possible, but unlikely in today's market.   I suggest that until Toyota institutes a real order system, anyone with a preference for a specific model should place orders in more that one sales region to increase the likelihood that the model you wish will be shipping when you get to the top of the list.   PS I almost ordered my car from a dealer in the Boston sales region. They are now delivering Models 6, 7 & 9 to customers who placed orders in November.

It is terrible that your Toyota salesperson didn't explain to you up front how the ordering process works, i.e. that individual orders are not placed with the factory. He/she also should have told you that package 7s aren't being sent to your region, so you could have switched packages or cancelled your order. When I ordered my package 3 in November, the salesperson was very clear about how the ordering process works, and has kept me updated regarding changes in package allocations. If I were you, I would complain to the sales manager about the salesperson, and to Toyota about the dealer.

It has unlock codes for detailed maps of all major US cities, cigarette lighter/12 volt power plug adapter with speaker, PC software and USB download, bean bag mount ( portable can be used in any car), touch screen , waypoint storage, route storage, find points of interest. Software and maps can be upgrade from the Internet. Major Street Map and POI revisons come out about every 18 months and last one cost $155.   Doesn't have bluetooth, but cell phones are dangerous, blue-tooth or not. They still take your attention away from driving. However bl;uetooth and other hands-free cell phones are certainly less dangerous than handheld and some people need to use them in their business. However if you see a large SUV with someone taling on a cell phone, clear a path, especially if they have kids in the vehicle and most especially if they have some kind of sports or fitness logo on theri rear bumper or rear windshield.   YMMV,   MidCow

I'm about ready to buy an '05 Prius but I hate the High Intensity Headlamps. They blind other drivers - - they are like looking into high beams for oncoming drivers. I don't want to put more of these on the road. The dealer has been getting lots of complaints on them and their service dept is actually replacing them with other headlamps...for a price! So if you want package #6, you pay extra to have the dealer take off the blinding headlamps, or order a different package. What are other people doing about this and why do auto manufacturers put these road hazzards on cars in the 1st place? Replies to this message: gagrice (Oct 26, 2004 10:34 am)

HID lights are not a hazard if they are aimed properly. They are on OEM on many many cars and have not yet been "outlawed" anywhere.   Any other drivers who get blinded is because of badly aimed headlamps.....
