Wondering if anyone has any experiences with the voice activated navigation system they would like to share? Is this user friendly and accurate? Does it update automatically or do you have to bring it to the dealer to have it updated periodically?

NAV is accurate and very addicting. Having an instant map available causes you to drive where you have never driven before, making up your own detours whenever you encounter a road delay.

The POI (Point Of Interest) feature is fantastic. Being able to see location of things like near by places to eat (with names and phone numbers) allows for travel flexibilty. You just make up plans as you go.

All the data is stored on a DVD under the driver's seat. It's surprisingly complete. Many people likely won't bother to ever purchase an update. But you can if you want.

The interface is very user-friendly... once you've had a demo of it. Not knowing what's available is the issue, since most have never even seen a NAV system like that before. Navigating using nothing but audio (not looking at the Multi-Display at all) works quite well too.

The voice-recognition aspect is rather handy. Zooming and POI stuff is very useful. There are other features, like climate-control, that uses voice too.

The NAV system also comes with Bluetooth support. That's priceless. It makes hands-free systems very jealous. The automatic wireless interface to your cell-phone is pretty sweet.

DVD Navigation is certainly addictive and accurate. It is also a source of frustration. Let me share some of these frustrations.
1. The voice command may not always recognize a "valid command". Should you have an "accent", your in for some rough time talking to the system.
2. I found out that there are certain towns in California the navigation system will not guide to the street level. It will guide you to the town center and then, your are own your own.
3. I was once in an unfamiliar territory when I tried the POI(restautant) option. Cool, it gave me places where I could eat. After lunch, until now, all the restaurants POI lit ups the screen wherever I go. One time, when I was in Chinatown, all I could see on the screen were POI. It made my navigation in Chinatown very difficult. I have not yet figured out how to get rid to those POI icons when I don't need them.
4. I was showing off this NAV system to one of my friends how this car will tell me to get to his place. I wasn't really intenting to go over there but every time I start the car, it would highlight the route to my friends house and that nice lady keeps telling me were to turn etc. I could't figure out how to cancel that destination. I ended up going to my friend's house just to end the guidance system. Just imagine if my friend's address was out-of-state.

Hopefully, somebody out there could help me with these frustration.
Also, while looking at the Japanese Prius web site, there was a DVD disk available that had a 3d display. The US version had you looking down on the street and that you where always facing north. This Japanese version had you looking down 45 degrees and will follow the road whether it is facing north south east west or anything in between. It also showed landmarks like buildings, hills, or bridges. This is really cool if somebody here in the US can develop and market something like this.

I wonder if a Prius without the Navigation/blue tooth package installed could be upgraded later...just like the 2d versus 3d package maybe upgradable??? Package 7 to package 9???

Eventually, I would like to do that. I have already begun creating illustrated "how to" documents for the Bluetooth feature.

Come on, it really isn't that hard. I'm driving a '03 Lexus GS300 Sport Design loaner while my RX330 is being built and it has the same navigation system. I figured out all of the things you are questioning in my first few drives without ever opening the manual or cd.

Look through the MENU section and you'll find what you need.

The Toyota site says that you can't get the Leather Faced Seating option with Package #9. What gives?

Car mats - standard or optional by ramesh_meera

Ok, our long wait is finally approaching its end (or, so we hope!) after more than 4 months.

Now, the dealer and Toyota are informing us that the cars come with floor and cargo mats as default options, to be installed at the port-of-entry (Long Beach, CA). Of course, we'd been insisting that we did not want floor & cargo mats. The Prius web site indicates that mats are extra accessories (approximately $180). Both, the dealer and Toyota don't know if we will be charged extra though.

Have others had the same experience too?
