Hi. New to this. A shop where I have brakes, tires, etc., done says Volvo recommends timing belt replacement at 120K, with lots of dire warnings if I do not. I have 139K on it now. Do I spring for the $900 job, which they're quoting me (which includes water pump replacement -- is that necessary?) and to do it as soon as possible. I live in New England, if that matters, and I plan to drive this car as long as I possibly can. Thanks.

Replying to: bruce163 (Oct 12, 2009 7:36 am) Volvo's use zero clearnace engines, which means if the timing belt breaks, the pistons will come up and crunch the valves. Rebuilding a head is expensive. Much more so than the $900 for the work. Go directly to the mechanic, do not pass go do not collect $200. Let them do the water pump too. |
