We should talk more.
I really really miss the days when I always had 2-3 beaters.

There are a lot of us who get some great pleasure out of driving cars until the wheels fall off. The pleasure of not going into a dealership for eight to ten years. The joys of NO car payments for the past 15-20 years.

The joy of finding a car for $1000 and driving it for 50-60k miles.

People at work laugh at us for it ... until we have to pick them up when their new car is in the shop for a warranty repair. Then, they tend to be less picky.

Revel in your junkers if you wish. But please, you're not trying to convince anyone that your average $1000 car is more dependable than the average new one, are you?

I have to agree with you this time landru. But on the other hand as soon as my Tahoe is paid off I think I will be driving it for some time after. I am tired of paying car payments. My goal is to be debt free in the next couple of years. I am well on my way.

As for Ebay, I know a guy selling cars and he makes a fortune. I am not kidding when I say he probably pushes 100-150 cars a month over Ebay. He loves it. Works from his home...the whole nine yards.

More dependable, absolutely not.

If I spend $1k for a clunker for transportation, I accept the fact that I will spend more on maintenance than the person who drives new. On the other hand, I am not laying out a car payment, paying more for auto insurance, shelling out more personal property tax ...

My comment about driving people to the dealership refers to an old job that I had a few years ago. I was driving an '80 Malibu when I completed grad school and started working. I was working with all of these kids, many of whom had cars almost as bid as their salaries. I took a lot of grief for driving a beater ... until THEY needed a ride. Four rides to a Honda dealership for paint issues for one of the kids. I had to tease him that he was willing to lower his standards to ride in a vehicle he referred to as a "piece of junk".

...... Hmmm, you should call the Guinness Book of World Records .. if he is selling 100/150 vehicles a month on ebay, that would be a world record .. he would also have to have at least 400/600 vehicles on the ground to keep up with all that demand ..

sniff sniff, do I smell a little smoke here ..?

not a bad deal by qbrozen

So I mentioned a while ago I'd post any decent deals if I saw them. Well, I thought about buying this as a beater to have around, and the dealer is only about 30 minutes from where I live. Terry pegged it as a $2500 auction vehicle, so it looks like this buyer got it at auction prices. Not bad.

and for those who read this after the link is dead in 29 days, its a '98 Saturn SW1 wagon with 69K miles, AC, stick, and CD player. Looks pretty clean save for a couple of scratches. And looks like it might need new tires soon. I thought it was going to close even cheaper, but, still, seems like $2500 is a good price. I want to keep an eye on it and see if feedback goes through for the deal.

I've noticed the smart bidders will often wait until the last couple of minutes to sneak their bids in. You got "sniped" as they call it.

What I do when I really want something badly, is that I place the item on my "watch" list and place the end of the auction on my MS Outlook calendar with an alarm. I wait until the last five minutes. I place the bid and then wait for the snipers. Generally, they think that if they bid in the last 10 minutes, they win.

In the last five minutes, I just keep hitting the "refresh" icon for a while. and see if there is any further interest.

If you bid several days in advance, you are cutting your own throat as it generates a lot more interest.
