Did you get it used? The previous owner may have installed an alarm.

You have an aftermarket alarm. Either the selling dealer or someone else installed it. Hopefully you can pull the fuse for it and still have your factory alarm.

My 2003 came equipped with a factory alarm. Although I see it's optional on 2005 models, I've yet to see any 4Runner from 2003 forward that doesn't have a factory alarm. The flashing lamp is on the radio display.

Some less than reputable dealers, like my selling dealer Roseville Toyota in Roseville, California, try to sell the unaware an optional alarm system (for $800) even though the vehicle already came with an alarm system. The dealer alarm is afermarket, not factory, and just about pure profit for the dealer.

Thanks. Yes, the dealer replaced the three belts (AC, Gen/Alt, Power Steering) when he replaced the Timing Belt--no extra charge for labor. He also checked the water pump, which can only be replaced after removing the timing belt. It didn't need to be replaced, but certainly a good time to check it. FYI - The timing belt, even at 99K was in fantastic shape!

I learned several things recently (confirmed by three dealers). If your 4Runner has a mix of 3 DENSO and 3 NGK spark plugs, you still have the original factory plugs in you truck! Second, all Toyota's spark plugs are sold pre-gapped.

Can you or anyone recommend a platinum or iridium plug for my '03 4Runner? The dealer does not show anything except the standard 30K spark plug for my '03 Runner.

O2 Sensor - When to replace? by drex1

When should I replace the O2 sensor in my '99 4Runner (now, 100K miles)? Are there certain systems to look for or easy ways to check its operation?

I am told the O2 sensor (that affects gas mileage) to replace is the one forward of the catalytic converter. Can anyone confirm that?

I own a 97 4 runner 2WD. very happy with it but really want 4WD....would owners of 03-06 4WD Runners give me your opinion of your purchase after a couple miles on the newer model?

I have a both a '99 (w/100K miles) and a '03 (w/27K) 4Runner with 4WD and love them both. The '03-'06 4Runners are a much smoother and provide a powerful ride (less truck like). Bottom Line: If you like the old model, you will love the new one!

I have a 2004 SR5 V8 4WD. I only have 13K miles on it, but it has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. I have not had one issue since the day I drove it off the lot. It is the smoothest and most refined SUV I've ever driven and cannot be beat (IMO) for bad weather driving. I love the V8 model, especially the fact that it is in 4WD all the time. Gas mileage is actually pretty good. I have been getting 19-21 on the highway depending on speed. All in all, you just cannot go wrong with the 4Runner. Good luck!

I have the same exact problem. The dealer couldn't (wouldn't) reproduce it because of the high speed. I've heard that it could be exhaust related probably due to some resonance at that speed. Did you try it in 4th gear at a lower speed but the same rpm as when you're in 5th at 75 mph? Let me know if you come up with something. Mine is an 05 SE V8.

Transmission whine by coloron

I bought a new 06 SR5 V6 a few weeks ago. It is very smooth and quiet on the highway except for a whine from the transmission. As long as the tranny is under load (accelerating) it is quiet but when I'm going down hill and let off the gas so that the tranny is braking, even slightly, it has a very noticeable and very annoying whine. It's not noticeable around town but on the highway it is very obvious. Is this a normal characteristic of these vehicles or should I be complaining to the dealer? I'm really hoping it can be fixed. Any chance that it might break in and quiet down after more miles (only 600 miles on it)?
I love the SUV in all other aspects but this noise gets on my nerves very quickly.
Thanks for the help.
