#1159 of 2607 1993 3.0 blown head gasket in replacement longblock
Aug 14, 2005 (9:07 pm)
I have a 1993 4 Runner with the 3.0 V6. A few years ago it was discovered the head gasket was bad, and I (Toyota Dealership)replaced the short block. This was in Riverhead NY, and the 4 Runner had 118,000 on it. It now has 178,000 and has had a major head gasket eruptin/incident.
My question, and I only ask out of desperation, is...Is there any other possibilities of getting a hand from Toyota service?.. I am always on top of the maintenance, fluids, timing belts etc, and am very disappointed that this block only made it 60,000.
Don't get me wrong, if I had the coin I'd "get r dun". l've become very attached to that truck, and would love have it fix, and buy additional Toyotas. It's just that this my medical bills have taken the pep from my step!!!!!
....how about granting a $4325 trade in on a new or used 2005?...The financial hardship came at the worst possible time, and...it's just another cut..and straw (death by 1000 cuts & the straw that broke....) The only thing keeping me from being recalled to the Army (I did 20) is medical and family hardships...And this added to everything else is discocerting....SOOOO..any thoughts PLEASE......

PS 2- if I can't get this fixed I'll have loads of mechanical parts and completly "rust free" body parts (from living in AZ and Florida)

I am sorry about you hardships You got to drive your vehicle for a large amount of miles not toyota .Paying for repairs or the replacement cost of the vehicle is your payment for miles used. At some point ,everyone has to pay for the use of the product they bought. Most of the cost is up front as when you purchaced your vehicle. In the same way would you return a pair of shoes after walking on them for a year and want a new sole for free? If you don't want you car to break don't drive it.Kind of dumb but if you drive it it will break and your will pay for it.

Any updates on your situation? I am having the exact same problem, except it's the #4 cylinder that is missing and I have a 98' 4Runner. I brought it in to a Toyota dealership and they ran a bunch of tests and told me that they "were confident" that it was a fuel injector problem. They did an injector flush but that didn't work. Then they thought I should just replace that fuel injector but it sounds like that didn't work for you. Any help would be great. Thanks.

That is too bad about your truck. Unfortunately, at almost 180K, you are well past the point where Toyota would help you out at all.
If it is any consolation, there are still used engines available in some parts of the country for these trucks, which you could have installed for perhaps $1500 out the door. Obviously, replacement of just the head gasket will run you less (as long as the head was not damaged when the gasket blew), but the used engine would have the advantage of lower miles.
These are durable trucks. It will probably give you several more years if you do the head gasket.
#1163 of 2607 1990 4-Runner Silly AC ?
Aug 15, 2005 (6:54 pm)
just bought my 1st 4-runner, a 1990. AC button left of heater controls has a green light when the heat is on.....is this AC? The button doesn't seem to actually push in or out. Thanks.
Aug 16, 2005 (9:53 pm)
yes, that is the A/C button, and if the green light is on then it is running, if it still works. And the button should push in and out, so if it doesn't, it is stuck. I've never seen that happen, so I am not exactly sure what you do to fix it, but I imagine you find a way to pry the button out, or remove that part of the center stack.

I took my 4runner to a local mechanic and what it turned out to be was the ignition wires (Sparkplug). Somehow the one going to cylinder 3 arced. The mechanic replaced all the wires for 65.00 and reset the check engine light for 55.00 and charged 65.00 for labor. Try changing the wires. I hope that's all it is for you. Let me know.
#1166 of 2607 Strange thing about Tire Pressure Monitor
Aug 18, 2005 (8:07 pm)
I took off the spare tire exactly the same day one month ago; everything is fine until today:the tire pressure monitor lights went on! I know that the spare tire is also monitored but why the low pressure light does not go on until 30 days later?
I found this annoying and, if I don't want to put the spare back, anybody knows how to disable tire pressure monitor system?

Maybe the pressure went down?

All 4 tires are above recommended pressure level.
And later I lowered them to recommended level - didn't help.
