I am serious about buying a car but I'm not sure which one yet, I have not bought alot cars and want to get a good deal. Researching on edmunds they say use TMV to negotiate a better deal. If the sales guy is going to over $1100 under TMV before you even sit down. There starting offer is not best offer so I guess my point is how to you use TMV to get a better deal seems like it will hurt rather than help?

The thing to remember about TMV is that it is a guideline only.
Also, it doesn't change fast enough to keep up with market conditions.
No guide, except Manheim online or Black Book(neither of which is available to consumers) can keep up with changing market conditions.
It's like buying stock, but relying on a month old Wall St Journal for pricing.

That is a great analogy.

I want to buy Microsoft stock and some "guide" that was printed a month ago tells me I should pay 25.00 a share. The guide MUST be right, right?

Ah, but the stock is now 33.00 a share and I'm frustrated becasue I have to pay more.

And if the stock went down to 20.00 a share then the "guide" misled me.

This is reality folks, it is a fast changing moving target of a market.

I guess everyone is just scared to death that they just might pay a few dollars more than someone else did!

Our TMV does not take into account customer rebates, tax, title, license or registration fees. You may want to look at Edmunds.com How We Calculate New TMV

PZEV costs by ejm99

On their Monroney sticker a Connecticut dealership is displaying MSRP's about $200 greater than what is posted on edmunds.com for the CT zip code. When I asked why that was, the sales person said it was because of the Connecticut PZEV costs. Is this a normal practice? If so, why does edmunds not include these costs in their MSRP? Thanks.

PZEV vehicles are required in certain states.. Specifically, CA, CT, MA, ME, NJ, NY, OR, PA, RI, VT and WA.

You didn't state which vehicle you were researching, so I picked one... Subaru Forester. If you go to the "Price w/options" page, you'll find an option for emissions equipment for $200. Next to that option is a link that explains the option, and in what states it is required.

I am looking at a 2007 Miata on the dealers lot. It has 137 miles and the warranty will be in full force once it is sold. How do I figure out the TMV of the car since it is new but also old?

Invoice pricing and local jeep dealer by dc325ix

My girlfriend and I went thru and priced out the jeep wrangler unlimited and submitted it thru edmunds to the 3 jeep dealers in our area - The Jeep dealer in Greenwich CT came back with well I dont know where Edmunds gets it's invoice pricing as these numbers are off and they are low - of course she wouldnt show us her invoice numbers - I was curious if anyone else has run into this problem before - also I get well thats TMV and that doesnt represent our area, and I say to them well it does as my zip code on edmunds that I put in represents our area and on and on; it would seem to me that we use edmunds for education and the dealers that sign up for edmunds would play fair, but I think they use it as bait and switch.

I agree. Something NOT right. When I purchased my Mazda in Feb, Edmunds had it as : Invoice $18.3K, MSRP $20K, TMV $19.2K. I went to dealer and started negotiations. Figured a good deal would be $18.5 - $19K. Dealer started at $20K dropped to 17.9 w/o me doing anything. Played around, checked Cars.com, Kbb.com etc. They were the same as Edmunds. Ended up paying $17.5. I was skeptical, seemed too easy. weeks later found them selling for high 16's. Edmunds was still at original figures. Learned lesson, From now on just pit 3-4 dealers against each other and wait for best price. Will usually take 2-4 weeks. Also watch out for your trade........they will try to steal your car.

Good luck
