From my knowledge of TMV, I'm going to assume that they get the data off of average selling prices nationwide, from things such as cross-sell reports.

It's possible that supplies of a certain model may have tightened and prices have tightened.

It can happen towards the end of a model year. In the fall of 2003 BMW was very slow in shipping the 04 5 series cars, and there were next to no 03s left. Also, since the 04s were radically restyled and a lot of people (Myself included) didn't like the redesign, we got something of a run on the 03s. All of a sudden instead of having to dump the "obsolete" cars, we were selling them for about $2,500 over invoice less incentives. At one point we were moving 30 5 series a month, and our supply for the next 45 days or so was about 7 cars. We didn't have to short sell those so the pricing went up on them. The last 2 M5s that we got in 2003 went for MSRP...there were just none left and buyers knew it was their last chance to get a new M5 for 3 years.

Supply vs Demand.. the usual.

1.) What would make the National Base Price go HIGHER later in the season?

Could it be the plunging dollar which makes it more expensive for manufacturers to buy components from outside the country?

Tidester,

I figured that he was talking about the base TMV price... MSRPs almost never go up late in a model year.

I assume that if, say, Sticker was $22,000 invoice was $19,500 and TMV was, say, $20,100 that he saw TMV go from $20,100 to $20,600.

Did I assume correctly or did I gloss over a post and goof up again?

"...Did I assume correctly..."

Yes you did. Edmunds lists the MSRP and invoice (both of which are unchanged). Next they list "National Base Price" which is usually somewhere between the two. This is the number that went up. This I assume represents the average for sales nationwide not considering any regional factors.

Edmunds also include a separate "regional adjustment" which factors in local conditions. I've seen this change from month to month but not by much. They also include "color adjustment" and delivery separately. The total of all these is TMV.

BTW, this is for 2008 models I am looking at so I don't think low supply had anything to do with it. Maybe one of you guys on these forums went out and got "clubbed like a baby seal" and skewed the average.

Factory-to-dealer incentives are included in TMV, but not customer rebates.. A shift from dealer incentives to customer rebates could change the TMV base price...

Can't speak to this specific case, but that is one possibility..

TMV missing rebates by oldfarmer50

Today I was checking TMV for a 2007 car I'm tracking to see if the rebates have increased. Where previously was listed a rebate amount in the TMV calculation it said simply "available". I clicked on this and was shown a list of $500 rebates for special groups such as military or recent grads.

The funny thing, on the same page was an advertisement for the same car promoting a $2000 unrestricted rebate. TMV didn't list this. Why would this be?

Might be a mistake. If you get time, you are welcome to report it using the "help" link at the bottom of each page - those e-mails go directly to the right team. My powers stop here

Thank you for reformating your "research and spec" back to the old format. Now I can get the info for the model I interested,i.e. deluxe vs base.
