..... Basically, it was a flop .. no "eyeball" appeal, no I gotta have it, good vehicles but just another one of many in the mass of sheet metal .. also Volvo marketing is smart (do you think Yota got the idea by themselves) .. wait til' the end of the year with very limited quantities and go on ...

Keep alive.. by derzhimorda

I think it would be a good idea to keep this group alive with updates with recent buying experiences/information. I am primarily interested in 2.5T S60.
I got a couple of offers of 3 under invoice. There was also an offer of 5 under MSRP. Those though were for cars with the premium package. I personally prefer a car with no leather and that's not a really popular configuration. I failed to find a dealer that would have one and hence was not able to negotiate directly.
I wonder if anybody had better offers recently than what I mentioned. Someone mentioned a 4000 rebate in the S60 discussion group. I am not sure if that is correct.
Also any info on buying a base 2.5T would be interesting.

I've received the same invoice - 3k and msrp - 5k offers (from what I can tell, those 2 numbers are very close to each other for most configurations). I, too, noticed someone who posted about being told by his dealers about a 4k dealer incentive, but no one else has mentioned it, and the same poster referred to a 3k incentive in a more recent post.

I, too, was interested in a car w/o premium package (didn't want the moonroof). I was able to find only one in my area (Wash, DC), and instantly decided against it -- the cloth was (IMO) ugly in terms of styling (think Subaru), and the absence of the moonroof didn't add anything to headroom. I will also bet that if you can find one w/o premium in dealer stock, it will be in black or white.

Well, I agree, premium package adds to the way the car looks - the wooden trim and many other nice touches. Just the fact that dealers do not have the base configurations indicates that people in general do not really like them. On the other hand, I have leather seats now. In the summer your butt gets burnt and in the winter it gets frozen although the heated seats really help. To be perfectly honest, this is not the main reason to opt for the base. That is the price. It is kind of inconvenient to pay for something you do not need and barely like. I even tried base 2.4 but that one just does not move. As for the color, S60 is an interesting design and looks good in almost any color. I personally prefer gray, green or white.
Interestingly enough, however, I am getting better discounts on a car with the premium than the base. I was offered 5 off the invoice a month ago but did not take it because I just started looking and did not know the numbers or what I want.
Looks like you tried some other cars. How did 2.5T fare?

5 off invoice (rather than msrp) on a brand new (not demo) 2004?? That's a great deal that I've not seen or heard of anywhere else after considerable investigation.

To answer your question, the 2.5T (AWD) fared very well; if all goes well I will be picking up nautic blue with sand or taupe interior (not 100% sure which; dealer said "tan"), plus premium and xenon, tonight or tomorrow.

I tested a very eclectic assortment of cars, including Honda Accord EX-V6, Nissan Maxima, Lexus GS300, BMW 330xi and 530i. I absolutely hated the Maxima (cheap-looking interior, bad fit and finish), and felt only somewhat better about the Lexus (cramped interior, not especially peppy). I really liked the BMWs, but ruled out the 530 because I was concerned about rwd in snow, wet, and slippery conditions, and thought the 330xi was very comparable to the S60 2.5T AWD, only $6-8K higher. I also liked the Accord, but had concerns about driver's seat comfort after an extended test drive and also poor traction in the rain (it rained when I did my extended drive, and it was not a confidence-inspiring experience). There also appear to be a fair number of complaints about the Accord on the edmunds board; while I discount much of it, there was enough there to concern me.

The Volvo met my needs -- very comfortable driver's seat, well above-average performance, acceleration and handling (I didn't notice a great difference b/w the Volvo and the 330), decent reliability (I've seen few complaints about anything other than the 2001s) -- at a good price point after the 5k discount from msrp. The major downsides are cramped rear quarters and absence of some of the bells and whistles of the Japanese entries (e.g., 6 CD changer, compass). I decided that, given the other virtues, I could live without the bells and whistles and there will hardly ever be people in the rear seat.

Anybody know how Edmunds arrives at it's $30008 invoice price for a GLX 4Motion? My calculations give me a figure closer to $30911, with $28008K as a base price GLX, $1073 for triptronic, and $1540for 4Motion.

I bought a used 2004 TL w/ 6MT, sport tires & nav system for 30,000. The car had 11,000 miles on it. Do you think that was a good deal?
