I also consider the lack of center console storage bin to be an issue with this car. I actually test drove a vehicle today that had a regular glove box, center console storage, and another bin on top of the dash, just like the HHR. It was a 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander.   I am surprised that there is no aftermarket console storage bin, or entire replacement console available yet - surely there would be great interest in this product? Replying to: p100 (May 12, 2008 5:42 pm) Mine has the 2.2L with the five speed. Mileage is pretty consistant. Power is adiquate, at least for me. I think with the five speed, its easier to find the right gear, rather than the auto transmission having to hunt for it. Once you get used to the car, always having it in the right gear become very intuitive.

I am looking at the HHR, but I am concerned that I will not get the increase in gas mileage that would be needed to offset the cost of the vehicle. I know the gov estimates 22/30 on the 2.2, but I would like some real #s from the 2.2l with auto trans. Any help would be greatly appreciated. For calculations, I drive 12 miles one way to work, 6 days a week. Approx 4 miles city and 8 miles hwy. Replying to: chevy4ever (May 13, 2008 7:11 pm) I just got a new HHR with 2LT package which is the 2.4 engine/auto and on my very first tank of about 200 miles which is 3/4 city I got 22.9mpg which I thought was outstanding. Once the engine gets broken in I feel this should improve. I see no reason why you shouldn't get about 25mpg if you take it easy.

Replying to: chevy4ever (May 13, 2008 7:11 pm) On the main HHR page with all the different HHR topics there is a box on the right called "Learn More" which has 27 general reviews right now with some posting mpg. I believe because of the gearing the auto and stick are about the same mpg though the stick would likely move you faster from the light.

If that is correct, you'll never get your money back trading in the Silverado in the depressed truck market, via the tiny savings in gas. Go to fueleconomy.gov to enter your own mileage figures and annual mileage and gas prices to find out what the difference in gas costs will be on an annual basis.   If you are trading in the Silverado for other reasons, then of course it's probably the time to look for a vehicle with better gas mileage, but it still has to fit your needs (hauling etc.).   Or do like a lot of families and contractors are doing. Keep the older pickup and get a super high mileage commuter vehicle with a stick shift (Yaris, Fit at 35-37 mpg) or high mileage (Caliber, Versa at 25-30). If you chose carefully and buy carefully annual depreciation should be low, and maybe you can pass it down to your kids.   There are a lot of factors to take into consideration. Mileage is only one. It's cousin the Chevy Cobalt which is built on the same chassis is also a very nice car for the money and tops in mileage with the great Ecotec engine of course. Stay away from the Caliber because its build quality is not very good and average mileage. The upcoming Chevy Aveo for 2009 will be slightly restyled in the hatchback with upgrades including engine which will put it in the Yaris, Fit mileage ratings.

Hi! I am glad to find this forum. my husband recently installed a new air filter on our HHR and was faced with the same problem. where the heck is the air filter????/ where it is practically under everything you see when you look under the hood! we got out the owners manual and it advised taking it to the dealership to have the new airfilter installed because it was a difficult job. being the can do guy that he is, hubby tackled the challenge and after several minutes of taking off all of the protective covers, sensors etc. he was able to replace our air filter which by the way , at 17,000 miles , was not very dirty you may want to wait awhile depending on how many miles you have on your car. also we are not getting good mileage. when we first bought our car , we were averaging nearly 28 around town and were please as punch! now we are lucky to get 26. everyone is telling us it is the ethanol in the gas, but we are not so sure. I would love to see 30! that is what we hoped for when we bought our car. we did see 31 on a long trip shortly after we purchased but not since. we also have issues with the rocker panels in front of the rear wheels. lots of road rash. our car is the majestic amenthyst (sp?) and now the rocker panels look grey. we brought this issue to the attention of our dealer early this year. they advised installing splash guards or running boards. we installed the splash guards right away but we are still very unhappy with the appearance of those panels. the rest of our car looks perfect. I took it into the dealership 2 weeks ago and it seems chevy now has issues a "fix" for this problem because of all the complaints.. but we are not happy with their fix. they want us to buy, paint and install running boards at our cost and they will pay to refinish and paint the rocker panels. we feel this is a design issue and a common customer complaint and that they should pay the total cost for this resolution. what do you think? has anyone else had this issue??? thanks for any advise and help. kathy Replies to this message: laco (Aug 18, 2008 1:20 pm)

Replying to: ourwayband3 (Aug 07, 2008 2:38 pm) I installed mud flaps front and back. It seems to have helped protect the rocker panels and the leading lower edge of the rear fender. It wasn't that expensive to do.
