Never heard about the legal ramifications of the dealership but I know someone who worked in the safety and legal department of GM responsible for recalls (PR). The dealership thing assumes that the owner goes to the dealership. With quality so high today most never go back to the dealership for service.
I did find an article that referenced 25% so maybe my most is too high or perhaps it was GM recalls that she was referring to. Anyway it is an interesting article on recalls.
What's more, compliance with federally mandated recalls is tough to achieve, since car owners ignore up to 25% of recall notices,
You can see why I have little respect for our recall criteria if you read the article.

I have to disagree with you on that as I have had vehicles in for warranty or oil changes, etc. a number of times and have had it released back to me after informing me they had to order parts to fix it. If what you said was true just think of the PO'd customers who sometimes would have to wait weeks for repair parts for a recall.

I had it done on my 2007. It really is not a big deal, took less than 30 minutes, and does not show.

the liability issue and release of the car back to the owner is only for mandated safety recalls is my understanding.....your warranty repairs and normal oil changes dont fall in this category....I highly doubt that if a warranty repair posed a safety concern....a dealership would release the car back to you awaiting parts...
dealers when notified of a recall also suppose to order parts ahead of release of the recall to the public based on the inventory of cars sold by them and in the region by other dealers .again ...remembering each is an independent franchise, thus not working on the recommended business plan....

I'm pretty satisified with my 2007. Bought it to tow behind a motorhome, which we do, but of our three cars, its the one we use most. Its comfortable, and gets good mileage. Mine is a five speed, I can count on about 28 around town and 35 highway. I don't drive it hard, however. In the year+ I have had it, it has been back to the dealer only for oil changes, and to have the recall work done. So far zero problems with it. About my only real complaint is the lack of compartment storage accesable to the driver, no console storage.

I too don't like not having a console but I guess it all equals out as every car I have had with a console didn't have the 2nd glovebox on top of the dash.

What engine do you have? This is really good fuel economy, I would be happy with that. Good reliability report is a plus too. I also consider the lack of center console storage bin to be an issue with this car. I actually test drove a vehicle today that had a regular glove box, center console storage, and another bin on top of the dash, just like the HHR. It was a 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander.
I am surprised that there is no aftermarket console storage bin, or entire replacement console available yet - surely there would be great interest in this product?

Mine has the 2.2L with the five speed. Mileage is pretty consistant. Power is adiquate, at least for me. I think with the five speed, its easier to find the right gear, rather than the auto transmission having to hunt for it. Once you get used to the car, always having it in the right gear become very intuitive.

I currently am driving a 2000 Silverado 5.3 Ext cab. I consistently get 17.5mpg city and hwy. I am looking at the HHR, but I am concerned that I will not get the increase in gas mileage that would be needed to offset the cost of the vehicle. I know the gov estimates 22/30 on the 2.2, but I would like some real #s from the 2.2l with auto trans. Any help would be greatly appreciated. For calculations, I drive 12 miles one way to work, 6 days a week. Approx 4 miles city and 8 miles hwy.
