Plus the V6 is going to be more powerful in most cases. I am picking up a new 08 HHR loaded with all options including 2LT package, sun roof, XM and leather, plus automatic with a sticker of $24480 for 22190 minus 2K in rebates. So for 20K I'm getting a loaded out desent ride that has some cool factor and will look great behing my motorhome. As far as apples to apples thats not fair. If you look at the new Mazdas the Mazda6 only advertises 22/27 which is less than the HHR. What you get doesn't mean you won't get that on the HHR. All we can compare is EPA ratings which shows the HHR as good and in most cases better than the Mazda. I have found that GM vehicles lb. per lb. usally out do most eveybody elses vehicle as far as real world mpg. Wife has a 07 Caddy STS that we took to SC. from Mi. over sping break and I got 27.3 driving 5 over posted speed which was 65 and 70. I drove 70/75. This is on a full trunk and back seat and 2 people so weighed close to 5000 lbs. I guess bottom line is buy what you like. I am thinking of putting a hitch on the back of my new HHR and wonder if anyone else has and what brand, and how do you like it. Do you wish you had bought another brand of hitch. Only thing I would pull with it is my neighbor has one of those little trailers about 4 x 6 with mess floor that I would use to haul my snowblower into the shop for tuneup etc. Also have bike rack that fits a 2" hitch so would need to buy an adaptor.

Replying to: p100 (May 03, 2008 8:34 am) That lower roof is pretty typical with a lot of cars. That is one reason I wouldn't consider a sun roof. I once was in a Lincoln Towncar in the back seat and my head slighly brushed the headliner and im only 6' tall. As far as fit and finish I haven't heard of any complaints to speak of. GM vehicles have had excellent fit and finish in recent years.

Replying to: p100 (May 03, 2008 8:19 am) I have also driven both versions 2.2 L & 2.4 L and I thought they were pretty peppy myself. If you have read any magazine reviews they both come in under 10 seconds 0-60 which is considered pretty good and on par with other vehicles this weight. As mentioned a 6-cylinder car is not a good comparison. It can be like getting out of a Mustang and getting into a Corvette, no comparison. If you need more oomph you should consider the SS turbo model which does upper 14 in the quarter mile with oversized brakes, etc.   I wouldn't buy an HHR if I was an aggresive driver anyways because it is a great compact car commuter with above average mileage for its size and shape.

My Mazda has a relatively small 2.5 liter V6 which puts out 170 HP, which is in fact a bit less than the 2.4 liter HHR engine (172 HP). The max torque of my Mazda engine is 160 ft-lbs, and HHR 2.4 engine has 167 ft-lbs, so again, I think this a fair comparison at least at low speeds.   It is true that aerodynamics plays an important role in acceleration at higher speeds, but not so much at very low speeds. The HHR feels terribly sluggish off the line compared to my Mazda. Gearing has a lot to do with it I am sure, as the Mazda has somewhat lower gears (both vehicles discussed have a 5 speed manual transmission ). But the HHR is brand new and my Mazda has almost 200 k miles!   Anyway, I am interested in the utility value of the HHR, not its performance capability. However, I still like to have some acceleration potential in case I have to merge into fast moving traffic. And this is becoming a real problem here in Florida with quickly growing population. It really seems that aggressiveness of drivers is directly proportional to traffic density.   The SS model is definitely something to look at, but I can get a lot better deal on this 2LT 2.4 / 5 speed 2007, and leather seats are not available in the SS. And I do not particularly care for turbocharged or supercharged cars due to their higher maintenance requirements. Next to the SS, this version should be the most capable performancewise. What is this about the safety recall to install plastic pieces under the headliner because supposedly these vehicles failed the federal standards crash testing? I saw a 5 star crash rating for these cars for both front and side impact. And now there is a recall because they supposedly cannot meet the side impact federal standard (for models not equipped with curtain air bags). The 2008 model brochure specifically states that the 5 star side impact ratings is for vehicles NOT equipped with side curtain air bags. And now they have to rip off the headliner and stick on a few pieces of plastic to make them 5 star again? This is really pathetic. The GM credibility has just gone out the window.
