Silly or not, once the recall is in place, if not taken care of, within, 15 to 18 months, you can not renew the registration on the car, so not having it done is not an option.
I have never heard of this. Must be a state rule? Most recalls are actually never done on vehicles so I do not see how this could be true. In fact how does a state office even get this info?

Don't know about other states, but California is notified of vin #'s of all vehicles recalled for saftey issues. They, DMV, is notified via computer when the work for the recall has been completed. You are given 12 to eighteen months, to have it done, if not when you go to renew registration, your DMV record for the car is flagged and can't be renewed until the work has been completed and DMV has been notified of its completion.

I test drove several new HHR's, both 2007 and 2008 models, all with a 5 speed manual transmission and both 2.2 and 2.4 liter engines. What struck me as obvious on the very first test drive (2.2 liter version) was the lack of power and slow acceleration. So much so that I asked the salesman if there was something wrong with the car. The 2.4 liter version was marginally better, but nothing much. I have a '99 Mazda 626 with a 2.5 liter V6 and 5 speed manual transmission and with 196k miles on it, The HP output is virtually identical to the 2.4 liter HHR engine, yet my Mazda accelerates much stronger in all RPM ranges - absolutely no comparison! And I get 26 MPG in city driving with A/C on all the time.
Is this HHR a rather heavy vehicle for its size? I found a new 2007 HHR LT2 completely loaded with a 2.4 liter and 5 speed manual, which is rare these days. But its obvious lack of performance has me rather stumped. I would be scared to even start a passing maneuver on a 2 lane road with traffic coming in opposite direction! Does the engine loosen up after several thousand miles and feel stronger? What kind of real world fuel economy can one except out of this thing with A/C constantly in use (I live in Florida)?
What is surprising to me is that I test drove a new Saturn Vue 2.2. liter 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual several years ago and it felt a lot stronger than an HHR with the same power train. Why is that?

I noticed several obvious flaws and oddities on the new 2007 HHR which I recently looked at. The left fender and driver's door seemed to be misaligned a bit, as the fender was not in the same plane as the door at the gap (slightly raised). The driver's door armrest plastic insert was not fitted properly and seemed to be rather rough at the plastic edges. The vehicle had a factory installed sunroof and I noticed that there is substantial reduction in overall ceiling height due to sunroof channel built under the headliner. Also, with the sunroof open, you could see a substantial gap in the front portion of the headliner just next to the sunroof opening, as if it was hanging down.
Is this fairly common for these cars? I am just worried how many defects are there where I cannot see them?

Your 626 weighs about 400lbs. less than the HHR plus your comparing a box so to speak to a streamlined car. Plus the V6 is going to be more powerful in most cases. I am picking up a new 08 HHR loaded with all options including 2LT package, sun roof, XM and leather, plus automatic with a sticker of $24480 for 22190 minus 2K in rebates. So for 20K I'm getting a loaded out desent ride that has some cool factor and will look great behing my motorhome. As far as apples to apples thats not fair. If you look at the new Mazdas the Mazda6 only advertises 22/27 which is less than the HHR. What you get doesn't mean you won't get that on the HHR. All we can compare is EPA ratings which shows the HHR as good and in most cases better than the Mazda. I have found that GM vehicles lb. per lb. usally out do most eveybody elses vehicle as far as real world mpg. Wife has a 07 Caddy STS that we took to SC. from Mi. over sping break and I got 27.3 driving 5 over posted speed which was 65 and 70. I drove 70/75. This is on a full trunk and back seat and 2 people so weighed close to 5000 lbs. I guess bottom line is buy what you like.

How can you get $ 2,300 off the sticker before rebates, unless you have a GM card rebate too or are you a GM employee? There is only about $ 1,000-$ 1,200 markup on the vehicle over dealer's cost. Same as on '07 models.

I am thinking of putting a hitch on the back of my new HHR and wonder if anyone else has and what brand, and how do you like it. Do you wish you had bought another brand of hitch. Only thing I would pull with it is my neighbor has one of those little trailers about 4 x 6 with mess floor that I would use to haul my snowblower into the shop for tuneup etc. Also have bike rack that fits a 2" hitch so would need to buy an adaptor.

That lower roof is pretty typical with a lot of cars. That is one reason I wouldn't consider a sun roof. I once was in a Lincoln Towncar in the back seat and my head slighly brushed the headliner and im only 6' tall. As far as fit and finish I haven't heard of any complaints to speak of. GM vehicles have had excellent fit and finish in recent years.
