Linzee: Also remember this--dealers continually do dealer trades--I live at Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri--bought my wife's 08 RAV4 in Sedalia, MO and it was trailered from near South Bend, IN. Take a look at one of your local dealers inventories--click on RAV4--you'll see "in stock"--what he has on the lot and also "available"--what is in a manufacturers pool of cars available to all the dealers. Again--best bet--find one on the lot you like--then start negotiating!! GET THE $39 Consumer Reports Car Buying Kit----best $39 you can spend! You can get the dealers cost---dealers invoice which includes the holdback and the MSRP. The report lists all option and the dealer cost and MSRP cost. Go to www.consumerreports.org Have fun!!

I am in the process of finding which dealer has the one I want (I know there is one in the area, it's just tedious tracking down which one) in hopes they will be more willing to negotiate. The saleslady I talked to at the internet dept at one of the dealership told me they were given a 'threshold' they could sale cars at which was $500 below invoice which according to that invoice still put it at $24,300 (base V6 with alloys and then the basics you can't get one without - tonneau cover, daytime running lights, etc). So I don't know if they aren't allowed or just refuse to go under that (but she didn't indicate there was any wiggle room), hence checking out other dealerships. Will get the consumer reports - should be entertaining, if nothing else, to see what kind of markup they do on these vehicles, especially the $55,000 Ford Trucks!!! Thanks for all your advice!

Hello Everyone,

me and one of my friend were looking for base rav4 4x2 v4 with third row seat. We picked up two RAV4s last week at this price.

2008 Base V4 4x2 Silver

Options: Third row seat, running day lights, engine immobilizer

(we were not ready to pay extra for options that we do not need.)

I did NOT check with CR or any other website except edmunds TMV.

The price offered to us is $1000 below TMV: $21,700

This is $500 below invoice as per edmunds website. However the dealer charged us few extras that we were not sure:

1. advertising fee = 487
2. finance fee = 310
3. dealer hold-back = 460

ARE those extra CHARGES that everyone pays? I am wondering.

We both paid around $200 extra for DMV. The final out of door price including DMV fees: $21,940

How is this deal? Looking at what others paid, I do not think I got a very good deal though. I should have read this forum before buying the vehicle

appreciate your inputs.

60 months 489
72 months 409

Blizzard White

I think this is a decent deal but should I expect or is there better available at this point?

Linzee: There must over 15 Toyota dealers in the DFW Metroplex---must be one that has what you want!! Remeber--chk the dealers inventory and look for "in stock" and "available!" I assume when you say $500 under invoice you're talking about "dealer invoice" which includes the "holdback?" The Consumer Reports Buying Kit purchased on line is "ready to use" once you purchase. You can "save" the cars you've reviewed which makes it nice when comparing. You'll be AMAZED at the Ford truck mark-ups--they are CASH COWS for Ford! Again, my BEST advice--get the car buying kit--locate the car and go to the dealer in person! Good luck and let us know how ya do!! BTW; Have you looked at the Nissan Rogue--mmmmmmmmmmmm--sweet ride and you can have All Wheel Drive! Bob

You know whats odd? You get different selection of available vehicles if you build your own on Toyota's website vs going to the individual dealership. According to dealer websites, there are only 3 'available' just black v6 2wd but through toyota, I get closer to 8 or so. I have been able to track down a couple of them. And oddly enough the dealer we test drove at 2 wks ago who completely ignored my email with an offer, called today informing me he would keep an eye out for something similar and that he had more negotiating leverage if it was on his lot. So I guess the calender days are ticking down ! : ) I did briefly look at the rogue but like the body frame of the Rav4 better - this is the only other vehicle outside of a truck that has received my fiance's approval (minus the ford mustang) and that took a couple of months of work! Plan on doing the consumer reports car buying guide tomorrow when I can get crazy printing things off. Do you have suggestions how to handle advertising fees? Have seen some posts referring to them and don't know if thats like the holdback and dealers wont really haggle over those or if you can count them out. Thanks again for all your help!

oregonmike1: I'm using Consumer Reports "latest" info. According to your post, you got the Base RAV4 w/Daytime Running Lights (DTL), Engine Immobilizer and 3rd Row Seats. Not sure of your area requirements, but--in order to get 3rd Row Seat, you "must" add 17 inch Alloy or Syled Steel Wheels. Lets assume you got the 17 inch Syled Steel Wheels since you're getting a "basic" RAV4. Here's the cost breakdown. This is what the dealer paid--not including the $422 Dealer Holdback. So, $19,781 + $32 DTL, $48 Engine Immobilizer, $760 3rd Row Seats and $96 17 inch Syled Steel Wheels. This means he paid $20717 for the car. He also gets $422 for dealer holdback. So, if he sold you the car for $20,717--he'd still makes $422---plus, if he meets other monthly/yearly incentives he stands to make additional $$$. The MSRP of your vehicle is $22,955 and it includes the dealer holdback. In your deal, he sold you the car for $21,700--he paid $20,295 which doesn't include the holdback. So, you paid $21,700 and he paid $20,295 for a profit of $1,405 plus the $422 holdback and any $$ he makes on the financing. I would look for a "better" deal. Get the CR Car Buying Kit--best $39 you can spend for 3 month's of UNLIMITED car pricing. Bob

Linzee: I know the Gulf States Region (GSR) you're in has some "strange" add ons and policies. If you check other dealers say in San antonio or Austin, you'll see the add ons. Then go to say Oklahoma City or little rock and see if those dealers have the same things on their cars. I know for sure, Kansas City and St Louis have different pricing Not sure if Arkansas/Oklahoma are in that region. Might be worthwhile to check--not far too Little Rock or OK City and Southwest flies to KC and St Louis!! I know for sure the GSR cars have some "BS" paint sealant/fab protection package that's on most cars--TOTALLY WORTHLESS!! Look out of your region!! I don't worry about advertising fees---I just go for my "bottom line" price. All the other BS--ad fees, paint protection etc is just another ploy to get you mind thinking about what ya doan't need to think about!! You can get a detail for about $125--I do it in the spring and fall--keeps the paint waxed and the interior clean! What I like about the Rogue is All Wheel Drive---RAV4's 4 WD is very limited. Good luck!! Bob

Bob (bobwiley)

Appreciate your inputs. Unfortunately I already put the money down (so has my friend). I will never buy my next car without CR Car buying kit.

However one thing I would like to add. We went to many dealers in and around portland metro for buying two cars. (thinking buying 2 cars together would give upper hand in negotiations) No one showed any signs even coming near to this price. Besides RAVs are in high demand and there are not many in stock. Some dealers said they have limited allocation from toyota and they do not want to sell it at lower profit.

My order is gone to toyota and will take 45 - 90 days to arrive.

thank you all,
Mike
