Toyota RAV4, SUV
#1563 of 4032 Western Canadian buying experience
May 30, 2007 (8:51 am)
I have recently concluded the purchase of a new vehicle.Among others, under consideration were the RAV4, CRV,Santa Fe etc.
I looked at,and seriously considered the RAV4.Didn't like the tailgate arrangement but apart from that I thought it was a pretty good vehicle.I then attempted to negotiate with a few dealers. No go! Absolutely no negotiation off MSRP was possible with them. Now I am all for making the car buying experience easier and more pleasant for the customer but not at the expense of "pay my price or walk" attitude of the dealer. I should note at this point that Toyota used to have a program called "access Toyota" which is where you still paid what Toyota asked for but the price was a discount off the MSRP.( I believe only some dealers participated in this scheme). However that was squashed when it was deemed to be "price fixing" and so now the dealers are simply demanding full MSRP from all customers.
The problem with this is that it only seems to apply in certain parts of Canada. If one is in Ontario you can freely obtain $2000.00 off the MSRP. This leaves me with a very sour taste in my mouth and I refused to play their game.
I am a long time Toyota purchaser, my last 4 vehicles have been Toyotas and I have generally been pleased with them, however their "better way to buy a vehicle" slogan which is how they advertise in Western Canada is nothing more than a ploy for their dealers to rake in more $$$$ at the customers expense.
I have a message for Toyota, don't ever think that with your no discounting policy that you are not losing customers. Based on your present policy I decided to change my make of vehicle this time around and have just concluded the purchase of a Mitsubishi Outlander XLS which after some negotiation I obtained at a price that I considered fair.It seems to be a great vehicle and when I am ready to change again I just may stay with them.
#1564 of 4032 RAV4 Limited 4Cyl 4WD - Price Paid
May 30, 2007 (7:22 pm)
I've paid OTD price of $26,300.00 for 2007 RAV4 Limited 4Cyl 4WD (Nautical Blue Metallic) with below options:
LA Leather Seat Package
EJ JBL AM/FM 6 CD Changer
HD Heated Seats
CF Carpet Floor/Cargo Mat Set
RL Daytime Running Lights
FE 50 State Emissions
and Remote Start...
Can someone please suggest whether I got a better deal or not? This is for Delaware state where there is only 2.75% sales tax.

I just purchased a 07 Rav4 Limited V6 Silver with Grey Leather interior and the whole moonroof/JBL changer/heated seats/floor mats/daytime running lights/state emissions.
I got it for the invoice price (at least that's what it looked like) of 27932 + Tax/TTL/License. We are gonna lease it and just for your advice title it through an area that has cheaper taxes. My parents live in the Lake County, IL where sales tax is 7% and I live in Chicago (8.75%). Therefore by titling it at my parents, saved me a decent amount. No one else was willing to match 27932 (one dealership probably would have gone down a couple of hundred, but they wanted me to some unofficial quote stating "I will buy the Rav 4 at 27,700." The dealer was gonna bring this piece of paper to his manager (whatever that means) but wanted me to sign the paper. It was a great feeling to say I'm not signing anything and I got up and left. I went to a different dealership and they did the deal at 27932 (which no other chicagoland dealership would match). I do think the holdback was about 500, but oh well. Anyone think I got overly taken on the deal?

Also in the market for a RAV 4 in Delaware, can I ask which dealer you purchased from , and what the MSRP was? Also, did you use internet sales, or visit the dealer? Thanks
#1567 of 4032 What I got today
May 31, 2007 (11:10 pm)
I was negotiating for a friend and here is what we got:
RAV 4 Limited
JBL 6 disk
Daytime running lights
OTD price: $25,500
I live in Southern California.
What you all think?
#1568 of 4032 Please stop using OTD prices!!!

OTD pricing is completely useless for comparison purposes in this forum.
This forum is used by people all across the country. Costs such at state taxes, local taxes, title fees, doc fees, ect. vary wildly depending on where you live.
The ONLY good way to share prices with people in this forum is to report:
1) the actual price paid for the car with destination (please be clear on what options are included),
2) any additional fees charged by the dealer (doc fees, prep fees, ect.) and
3) specifics of the trade-in, if applicable (this can greatly affect the price of the new car)
An OTD price for someone in California or Nevada is competely useless to someone who live in Ohio or New York.

I went to Price Toyota first then to Newark Toyota World. I don't remember MSRP accurately but it was just above 29k (with remote start of value $575). I directly visited the dealer and the sales guy is aware that I've already got some quotes from other dealerships.
Not sure if they had any Month End specials though...
Good luck with your purchase. Let me know if you need any further info.

Not sure wt the taxes r in ur area but I got Ltd RAV4 with almost same options with Leather and Heated seats + Remote start for an OTD of 26,300 in DE. That was 25,379 before tax, tag and doc fee. That was on 30th May so not sure of they had any Month End deals running though...
Hope this helps.

So did you end up buying at Newark Toyota World? What was the final price difference between the two...and do you know if they gave you invoice price? Thanks for your reply!

Yeah, I ended up buying there. I guess I got a bit below invoice as Edmunds Invoice with all the options excluding remote start is $25,585 (Remote Start Invoice is 380 totaling $25,965) and I got it for . Where as I got it for $25,379 before tax n tag which is about 600 below invoice.
Again, I'm not sure if going around Month End was the factor in me getting it below invoice though.
