I had a great time buying my 2007 RAV4 Limited 4cyl. This is in Oklahoma. RAV4's are NOT plentiful; the local dealers turn them quick. The V6 models are practically the stuff of legends.
What I did was plan ahead and use the salesmen against themselves.
First, I got a test drive in a Honda CR-V and a Mazda CX7 at adjacent dealerships. Got the salesmen's cell numbers and had them handy.
My trade was a 1999 Audi 2.8T with 154K on it and a host of issues, mostly due to my 18 y/o stepson playing NASCAR with it. About the best...and I mean best...I could hope for in trade was $4K. And that would possible only if they failed to put it up on a rack and really look at it; this car was driven hard by a teenager.
I went into the Toyota dealership on 1/31. Last day of the month and last chance for the salesmen to hit his quota. Went in at dusk so the trade was harder to see. It had been detailed and the engine steam cleaned.
The vehicle I wanted was a Limited with moonroof, daytime running lights, protection package, wood grain interior trim package, cloth seats (I don't like leather), cargo nets, and auto-dim compass mirror. Sticker was $26,993.
Their 1st offer was $1000 for the Audi, nothing off the sticker. I came back with $4000 for the trade and $500 off sticker. The 2nd offer was $2500 for the trade, nothing off sticker. I pulled out the cell phone and called the Honda guy and asked, out loud, if he had the 2007 CR-V I wanted ready to roll. That sent the new car sales manager over, a kid in a suit who looked all of 14. Before he could open his mouth, I said "let's avoid the little dance and BS rhetoric that's about to happen here and you listen to me for a minute". I told him I was buying a new vehicle TONIGHT, period. I could walk next door for the Mazda or 50 yards further for the Honda. I told him to look over my shoulder at the silver CX-7 at the Mazda store and said "they will do this deal...now".
I then told him that I would go $3200 on the trade and $300 off sticker and if they didn't take it, I was walking. The kid gulped hard about 3 times and said "OK, we'll do your deal".
I drove out 20 minutes later with the RAV4. And I love it.
So, I got a reasonable deal and was well rid of a rolling disaster in the Audi.

Shopping for a rav4 and got an initial price. Here are the details: sport, 4x2, 4 cylinder, 18" tires, tonneau cover, moonroof, floor mats/cargo mat, destination charge included = 22,988 + taxes. Is this a decent price? What can I get the dealer down to? Thank you for the advice.

I too live in the Pacific Northwest and have had trouble getting any movement from the Costco $500 under MSRP for the V6.
Sounds like you got a good deal and did a fair amount of legwork. I am looking for the 2007 Rav4 V6 Sport and looks like I will have to go to Roger's also.
How did you get the Vehicle Licensed in Washington? Did you have to get a trip permit for Idaho and then come across and license it or did they do it at the Idaho Dealership?
I think I will have to factory order mine too due to towing hitch ect.
Did they give you a time frame on the delivery or is it open ended?
What did they say the $79 doc fee was actually for? Can you PM me with who you spoke to there if possible?
Thanks for your time. Guess the Costco deal can be beat. My area Costco deal was $900 over invoice for the 4cyl and $500 under MSRP for the V6.
Thanks

Hi packrat,
I'm still waiting for my RAV4 to arrive, although I do have the VIN now. My contact at Rogers Motors is John Uhler (a really nice guy, and GREAT communicating updates and whatnot). When a WA resident buys a car out of state, you pay the sales tax at the time you register it when you get home. I assume a trip permit will be necessary.
My initial contact with John occured around the middle of January, and I was told it might take up to 3 months before our special-ordered RAV4 would arrive. It appears now that we will have it the first week of March, so that's not bad at all. John did not provide a detailing of the doc fee, but I didn't ask for one. Go for the V6; all my research indicates that it's a good investment. Refer to my original post here (#1244) for specifics on what I paid for each option and so forth. Negotiate with John using those numbers and you can't go wrong. Stick to $500 over invoice regardless of how many options you tack on. That's a couple thousand dollars less than the Costco deal. And unless you already have something better lined up, you might want to apply for the Costco Auto Loan. It's around 6 to 6.6%. A credit union can probably beat that rate though.
Good luck!

I am in the process of getting a Rav4 V6 4WD.
Looks like the dealer gave you a really competitive price on the warranty.
Could you tell me which dealer you got the warranty from?
I know in the past I have obtained an extended warranty from a different dealer than the one I bought the car from.
Thanks for your time.

Just wanted to thank you homerfan for the information in your posts.
The information allowed me to get several bids which I am still working on. Still looks like Roger's is the best price.
I copied the breakdown of your deal and plugged in my options ie: Sport V6 ect... I then emailed the different dealers. Worked like a charm.
Soon I will have a solid price and order I hope.

Hello packrat4,
I couldn't believe he negotiated the warranty down so much, for the best Toyota extended warranty even. I brought in all my research via "the folder" and had all the prices. I was thinking he was trying to meet his monthly quota.
My dealer was Champion Toyota in Philidelphia.
Good luck.
