On Saturday, my salesperson delivered our new 2004 Malibu Maxx LT to our driveway. The dealership is Suburnan Chevrolet in Ann Arbor, MI. We live 50-60 miles away. I was impressed that they offered to deliver the car. After all, it's a Chevy store, not a Lexus store. Overall, very pleased with the purchase experience. Only drawback was the vehicle was not really prepped as well as a new vehicle should be.
Some particulars of the deal:
Demo vehicle (driven by 60 year-old parts manager who drives like a grandpa, according to the salesperson) with 5300 miles.
Maxx LT with 1SB, DVD, XM Radio, CD changer, and sunroof. No OnStar.
Discount ($1,500) - this is the amount below GMS that I negotiated.
Price before tax and other state fees $19,225.25
I also paid $1,699 for a $0 deductible 5 yr / 90k mile Major Guard warranty. This was probably more than I should have paid, but I didn't feel like hassling with bargaining on it from multiple dealers and I gave in to the sales pressure. It was about $200 below the 'GMS' price that the salesperson originally quoted.
Our Maxx is Driftwood with the tan interior. The Maxx's exterior styling has grown on me over the past several months. It's not exactly beautiful, but I think of it as different - in a good way.
The interior flexibility, features, and quality is much more important to me. The Maxx scores big in all those areas.

Forgot to mention a couple things:
No trade-in involved in this transaction.
Dealer did add a $75 'doc' fee to the $19,225 price.
Competing dealers were willing to sell $500 to $550 below GMS pricing on a brand-new 2004 Maxx LT. We decided the extra $1,000 discount was worth it in exchange for taking a vehicle with 5,000 miles on it.
Dealer indicated they couldn't / weren't allowed to show the price of the vehicle below GMS. So I paid tax on the $24,225 price instead of the price after the $1500 discount and the $3500 rebate. The $1500 and $3500 were shown as down payment, basically. I did not press the salesperson on this, as I assumed it must be required by state law or something. I doubt the dealer is charging me extra sales tax and then keeping it, since this would be unwise and illegal.

seems odd they can charge you tax etc on 24k when your negotiated price was 19K.....on your sales invoice..wondering how they showed the sales tax calculation.....

In the NE the best deals were in July when they had a glut of vehicles,6k in rebates and now only 4K.

Sounds like I'm not a TON above the best price you have heard of. $129 more than what you saw, although that was 6 yr / 100k instead of the 5 / 90 I bought.
I had a feeling I overpaid somewhat, but I just didn't feel like dealing with it any more.

I took delivery of my silver Maxx LS on 10-18-04. The vehicle was a base LS with no add ons. It too was a dealer demo driven by one of the dealership's sales managers since May 04. It had 7100 miles and had the 7500 mile service completed. I was very happy with the service and sales at Mirak Chevrolet. I feel like I got a great deal on this car and they are committed to my satisfaction.
Paid $17495.00 plus tax and title.
Was originally offered a 6 yr 60,000 mile warranty for $895.00 (warranty started at delivery miles so good to 67,100 miles on the odometer) but asked about more miles and instead opted for a 5 yr 75,000 mile warranty for the same price. So my warranty now covers the vehicle until 10-18-2009 or the odometer reads 82,1000. The only thing I wish mine had was the xm but I am looking into an aftermarket system. I just purchased an aftermarket gps system and it works fabulous. It's the Garmin Quest, it is very small and has enough memory for detailed street level maps of the NE and highway maps of all of N. America. Also talks to you "Turn left in 300ft" Only $599.00

Read page 12 of your warranty booklet, demo milage not covered and even new non-demo is only covered to 1000 miles. Where did you get your information ?

Do not know about MI, but in CT the 6% sale tax is charged from the full price, including rebates and GM Card points. CT used to tax even trade-ins, but dropped it several years ago. Does not tax what you negotiate with dealer.
For example, with MSRP $27,000, dealer price $25,500, and trade-in $2500, the full amount of $23,000 is taxed at 6%, with total tax $1380. Your $3500 GM rebate will be considered to be a part of downpayment. The same with $1000 GM card money, and the current $1000 GM card bonus. I am not sure about GMAC bonus, but most probably it taxed too.
In other words, of the total $1380 sale tax, $390 ( 6% of $3500+1000+1000+1000) is tax on rebates.
On the other hand, coupons are not taxed.
#216 of 775 Price paid for '05

Just purchased our '05 this week. It's an LT w/1SB and rear DVD. (no On-Star, no 6 disc CD). I'm not much of a haggler, but the salesman is a good friend of mine.....he's still a salesman nonetheless, so I'm not sure if I received the best deal-or if I'm his latest victim...I even told him as much!!! I won't let him forget how he ripped my head off on this deal no matter how well he thinks he treated me....I had no trade either.
MSRP was $27,345.00
GM Rebate 2,000.00
I paid $23,500 plus tax/title/plates fees. He had to dealer trade to find the Medium Gray color w/the rear DVD so he said that he couldn't "get into the holdback" for me. This, after reading other posts, appears to be legitimate.
