I just bought an '07 Chrysler T&C Spring Special Edition Turing with the DVD and Tow prep package (leather, etc.) with an MSRP of $35,500 for $26000. The Dodge dealer down the street put a crazy price of $23,999 on a Dodge Grand Caravan (with a few less features) so I figured I would head two doors down and see what was available. I really was looking forward to buying an '08 but I couldn't justify the extra 10 grand.

As far as I know they still have the Dodge on the lot as well as one more T&C at the Chrysler dealer. These are at the dealerships on Stevens Creek in San Jose, CA.

I'm scared of my car salesman! by hulamom

Okay, I know this must sounds so ridiculous but...So, I'm purchasing a brand new car, the 2008 Chrysler Town & Country minivan, for the very first time. Sounds easy enough, right? Drove into the dealership parking lot, was quickly zoned in by the Car Nazi, Louis, and he was circling my Expedition in a matter of seconds. I like to think of my self as an strong and independant woman, so I think "I can do this"...and it goes pretty well as I'm guided to the array of Town and Country's, take it for a test drive, etc. etc. Now comes the scary part. Numbers are asked of me, numbers are thrown at me, he asks "What's the next step?", I get frazzled, tell Car Nazi I have to discuss the details with husband first (can't count how many times this excuse has saved me!) and thank the car gods that I escaped without injury.
NOW, I find this beautiful website completely by accident, thanks to Google, and I've read so many forums my head is spinning. Make a long story short...um, does anyone have a EC number that a mother of three and caretaker of her elderly father might be able to use to throw at Car Nazi to immobilize him for long enough to take SOMETHINGS, I'll take ANYTHING off the price? I get what the MSRP price is, have a vague idea of the invoice price, and have no idea if there's a difference between that and the employee price???? In all fairness, the manager did offer to give me a price where he said the dealership would only make $500 off the sale but he wouldn't put it in writing for me to show my husband.
If anyone can offer me ANY advice, it would be greatly appreciated. If you have an EC number, that would be even better Mahalo!

Are you in Hawaii?

My only advice is this: NEVER EVER deal with someone you are uncomfortable with. Walk before buying from someone that makes you feel slimy.

Thank you Graduate ...I just thought this was the norm and have no idea what to expect. Bottom line, I don't mind paying a reasonable price for a new car, I don't have to get THE BEST deal but I don't want to feel like I'm being yanked around either. And no, I'm not currently in Hawaii

Good, glad you aren't in HI. That way you have MANY options as far as dealers to choose from.

Try checking out several dealer's websites. Ask for price quotes by e-mailing them. Whenever I've done this (with both Fords and Hondas) I always am up-front with them. I ask for a complete breakdown of price, and I think it would benefit you to do so as well. On the vehicle you are inquiring about ask to see the:

Dealer's Selling Price (including destination) + Taxes + Any Fees. Get quotes from dealers as far as 100, 200 miles away. That way you'll have some bargaining chips to take with you when you go shopping at your local dealer.

Hi

I've used the "I'll have to talk with my husband" many times. It's a GREAT advantage we women can use to our advantage. Is this an up-front deal or are you trading in? I bought recently. They will deal with you better if you go in with your Edmunds Invoice Pricing in your hands. Are you buying off the lot or ordering?

Using the internet as suggested is a good idea. A few salesmen REALLY gave me a good quote over the internet. I was lucky enough to learn about the EC program from this site and managed to obtain one (it is easy because of where we live) so it made it easy for us.

Know your rebate before going in too. Visit the Chrysler.com site and figure out what it is on your model. It might vary by zip code, but I think right now it is $1500 everywhere. I am not certain but I think the areas that show only a $1000 rebate will also add on $500 for "Owners Loyalty" if you own a Chrysler product. Some dealers will tell you that they contribute part of the rebate -- this is BS. The rebate comes from Chrysler alone. Do realize that the "Lifetime Powertrain Warranty" is pretty good, so don't let them talk you into an extended warranty unless its what you want. And you can change your mind at the end of your 3 year warranty and buy one at that time.

Dealers make 3% on holdback even if they sell at invoice plus possible incentives. And there are BS charges on every invoice that we can't avoid. IOW the dealers will make money no matter, so don't feel guilty pitting dealers against each other.

They do deal better when you have your husband so take advantage of the chauvanism.

Thank you, Maryh3 and Thegraduate for all the advice. This helps me out greatly I'm living in San Diego right now and I'll keep pushing the search for the EC number as well! If any salesman in the San Diego or surrounding areas happen to read this, I will buy from the first salesperson who can offer me the EC number. Not really sure if this has any advantage for them but it couldn't hurt right? I'm gonna start my homework right now and I'll keep you updated!. Lots of aloha!

Maryh, I'll actually be paying cash...is there any advantage to this? And if I can buy off the lot, I will, but I've started searching the surrounding areas so far and only one dealership has the one I want. So I'm assuming this means I'd either have to purchase it from them or wait and order it from a dealership that offers the best deal

This is a soft market so your cash helps. I'd start by e-mailing every Chrysler in your area for a price. Often a young hungry salesman will give you a good price. Many of them beat around the bush and want you to come in first.

Be sure to e-mail the dealership which has the one you want. It helps if you request a price for a specific stock numbered vehicle. But dealers do trade cars with each other to secure a sale. If one gives a better price than another, bring their quote in.

I'll give you my numbers. I don't know why you can't do something like $100 over invoice - especially for the one that has exactly what you want. If you order you could offer them the invoice price.

My mini -- All invoice prices
08 Limited Invoice 32,496
Swivel seating 436
Double DVD + TV 1778
NAV 1144

On to that you must add these BS charges

5 gallons gas 14
Owner Loyalty Mailer 25
Metro DAA 305 (yours may vary)
Metro PPA 210 (yours may vary)
Destination 730

To that there maybe slight dealer charges but they should remain less than $100.

Subtract from that the $1500 rebate.

You should be able to figure a similar price for your using Edmunds.
