wow thank you so much for the response... i must admit the biggest and the baddest did look perfect... the unlimited looked priceless... but i just know that i am buying too much jeep for what i will do with it... the way i see it... if i love my jeep standard... i can always upgrade like you said... or sell and buy the big guns...

new or used now is the serious question... cause i hear some dealers have great deals on wranglers (used)...

New! The 2007 Wrangler is much better than the outgoing '06 model and cheaper too for what you get. It sits higher, drives better, has more safety features, a larger engine, and is just as capable, if not more, offroad than the outgoing model. The roof options offer more flexibility, the frame is stiffer and the ride is smoother. But don't take my word for it, look at the viewpoints of the various four wheeler magazines - they love it too, and one already voted it 4x4 of the year. Don't be fooled by your dealer who may try to convince you to get the '06: that is likely because he wants them off his lot. If you are willing to wait, and order one built to your specifications, you should be able to get an '07 at invoice or lower. If you need it now, you will probably have to pay more. Shop around, there are deals out there. Good luck and enjoy.

Full disclosure: I own a (built to my specifications) Silver '07 JK Wrangler X, 6 speed.

So what leverage do you use if you order one from a dealer and can wait while it's on order? What incentive do they have to not charge over invoice? I definetly want to go this route but I want to find what my best barganing chip is.

The only incentive for the dealer is if it's an extra sale that wouldn't otherwise have been made. That way it's an additional unit on the sales board at no cost or effort to the dealer.

You need to show the dealer that there's no way you'll buy an existing model from stock and that you'll give your business to another dealer if you have to. That's the stick. The carrot is to make the sale as easy as possible. Be ready with a deposit, be realistic with your trade if you have one, and make sure your finances are in order.

The main problem you have at the moment is that most dealers are limited to the number of orders they can place, and they may well be maxed out with every order spoken for. You may have to wait for supply to increase and demand to drop to get the price you want.

E-mail quotes for 2007 Unlimited by okaasan

I sent e-mail requests to the 6 dealers in Southern California listed in the LA Times and the 3 Jeep dealers in Hawaii. Every quote I received back has been for MSRP - nothing close to invoice. As you might guess, the tone of the e-mails has been "this is a bargain"...ugh.

I was looking for a blue Unlimited Sahara in automatic transmission.

We had bid on the Green one on E-bay that was a charitable auction for the Tony Hawk Foundation. MSRP was $36K (it was fully loaded) and it sold for $33K. After getting all of these quotes, we realize we should have tried harder to get that car since 100% would have gone to chartity and they would have shipped it to Hawaii for free.

Oh well, maybe I'll win the one on Miami Ink

Does this seem like a good deal in So CA? MSRP is around $29k.

Considering that most dealers seem to be asking MSRP, or even MSRP+, it sounds reasonable. That's not to say it can't be bought more cheaply, but that depends on how much time and travel you want to invest. It's certainly a good starting point.

The dealership is local and there really wasn't much negotiation involved. Basically he asked me what I understood was the price difference between MSRP and invoice. I said about $2k. He asked what I thought would be reasonable. I said somewhere in between. He said if he could do that price ($1k below), would we have a deal? I was surpised.
