#556 of 794 Intermittent Grinding Noise from Brakes by bobcz

Nov 27, 2005 (7:32 am)

Recently an intermittent grinding noise has started coming from the brakes on my 2002 Lincoln LS with Advance Trac. At first I thought the pads were worn so I had new brakes and rotors installed. That didn't solve the problem. The noise is especially prevalent when driving in traffic. The brakes seem to heat up and actually smoke. The noise is very similar to when Advance Trac is engaged in slippery conditions, however I get this noise now on dry pavement. Any ideas?

OK, guys, what's the deal with the moaning sound 1250 rpm in traffic, lower gears (only after some start/stop errands)? I've suspected the hydraulic fan (which doesn't run unnecessarily)and related system - but what actually makes the noise? It's been happening for about 2 years - a minor annoyance.

You seem familiar enough to help me out... my 2001 ls has a smell occasionally that resembles a hairdryer overheating. logically seems to be the heated seats... have any idea what it is??? also, is power steering in these cars known to whine? Any help would be greatly appreciated. i just bought it with 36K miles on it and it's a wonderful car. don't want it to become a burden so if you have any tips on known faults that i can be aware of would help too.

When do you get that smell, exactly? Is it only after hard acceleration or keeping the car at high rpms for 10-15 seconds?

As for the power steering - Ford power steering pumps do tend to whine more than others, especially near the limits or when it's cold. If it does it when it's warm during normal steering then it needs to be checked out. Could be a bad hose.

#560 of 794 Traction control light by bobn4

Dec 20, 2005 (11:48 am)

When driving my 2002 LS under normal conditions the Trac control light comes on and stays on until I shut off the ignition. When I restart the light will be off. This happens intermitingly, with no cause(loss of trac.). the trac. control works normally otherwise. This vehical has the stability control also. Why?Is there a sensor (Wheel) going bad?">link title

Dec 20, 2005 (4:30 pm)

My transmission went out suddenly friday >The dealer is saying it will cost 3100.00 to replace. It has 39900 miles on it . It has been serviced at each interval as recommended. Where can I find updates re; this transmission. I belive this to be a flaw in some component of this transmission
Thanks

Check you owners' manual. I believe that your warranty is 4 yrs/48,000 miles. When did you take delivery?

Have you tried switching AdvanceTrac OFF? Could be it's gone whacko and is riding the brakes.

"2) Reservoir for the cooling system oil was low. Once filled the last of the noises went away."

Probably the power steering fluid that powers the hydraulic cooling fan.
