Neither the Outback nor the Forester feel like they are true SUV's. Their handling and use of space is more similar to a tall wagon's. If you're looking for a vehicle with the SUV feel, you'd be better off with the B9 Tribeca.

At altitudes where you'll be much of the time, a turbo can really carry an advantage - they can compensate for the thin air and not lose power like N/A engines do.

06 Foresters make 230hp (conservative estimate) plus get 21/26 mpg, not a bad power/economy balance for mile high places.

Hey prosa

Thanks for the words. I really like space but I also prefer something that handles better than a sofa on soft springs. Hence the consideration to the Subarus.

I had a 96 Jeep GC and while it was wonderful off road, it was not at all fun on road. Since I don't anticipate any heavy duty off road from here on, I think I will put more emphasis on handling. Also economy is important today. And lastly, the air molecules are far apart up here in Colorado Springs - the turbo pretty much eliminates that issue.

Happy holidays

Thanks

Couldn't agree more about the turbo. I had a Passat with the 1.8 turbo and it didn't care if it was a sea level or at 10,000 asl. Would buy another but like the higher clearance of the Subaru and the Passat is all new this year. I have been burned on first year models twice now and one of them was a VW.

Not to mention a V6 4Motion costs about the same as my first house...prices are up there.

Mid-to-late November bought an '06 bean (list $33120) for $28974 including all dealer fees, but before tax & tags. Started with the internet, and all dealing over the phone, worked with 3 dealers. Two were just under $30K but the third was lower by about $900, so went with them.
Is there a reason why you didn't post the name of the dealers?
I found Manchester (NH) Subaru beat all the MA dealers, without a lot of haggling.

Bought at Carmart Subaru in Wilmington. Acton wouldn't budge off $29.7 before any dealer fees, and IRA was the highest at $29.9K. Carmart was $28.8K before dealer fees (which I think is a last chance a picking of my pocket). Even after the papers were signed, IRA admitted they couldn't have met the price; I think they thought I was lying. We bought in MA because of the convenience factor; Carmart & IRA are close to home. Haggling was not an issue; Carmart was up front with their price; via email and phone, I gave the other two 2 chances each to bring their price down, but they declined. I was not interested in going to their dealerships and going through the grind. That's a waste of my time, and time is money. Someone else may have done better, but probably not by a whole lot; we are satisfied.

Just browsed Van Bortel Subarus website and they are advertising (until Jan 3), invoice minus any factory rebates minus $800 from their online coupon. Current factory rebates for an 06 Outback are $1000.
