UPDATE
I went to the dealership in Queens to test drive, then made an offer on a 2010 Graphite Grey Limited 2.5, w Moonroof, which they had listed at $31,569.
http://www.koeppelsubaru.com/new/Subaru/2012-Subaru-Outback-bc878cef0a0a0065016a- 6bdf0860e3d2.htm
I took in a printout I created from www.truecar.com, which shows the best deals other regional dealerships are ofering for same car and told them if they match the best I'd buy on the spot.
https://www.truecar.com/price-manager/21912/
Lowest was $28,410, which said $2800 below sticker and $900 below factory invoice. The balked and said they'd seen those website printouts before and that they were bogus, best they could do was $500 off their sticker ...then let me walk (surprising.)
I think it might have to do with being in/near NYC, or maybe those other offers are bogus (turns out to be another car when you get there...) But many reports on this site of ppl getting $3k-4k below sticker, so I was a bit puzzled...
will run down those other cars from truecar printout ...

If you can get 2-3% under invoice, that's great. I wouldn't get too stuck on a number because it is going to vary based on the specific car's MSRP. Invoice is generally 6% less than MSRP and dealer holdback is another 3%.

We just bought a 2.5 limited with sunroof for right at 30 out the door. They offered the warranty, and I said I'd pay 1k tops. They went down to 1099, but I said no, so no extra warranty (for now).

nice deal.
I used Truecar and it connected me to 3 dealers with listed prices below MSRP, but after an annoying series of exchanges it became apparent they didnt have the exact model I was looking for and were less than specific in replying to my specific requests. One guy did offer this:
$28900 +
tax +
$195 doc fee +
$7.50 tire fee (NJ residents only)
but I assume tax is 8%(?), so that is still 31.4K or so, more than I'd ideally like to spend. I may still do it (he's pushing for end of month Oct) ...but also may wait until after the Winter. No burning urgency on my part and I figure prices will likely go down...

Purchased from Camelback in Phoenix. Great staff (VERY different from an awful experience I had there 7 years ago), great price ($32,500, ab $1000 under invoice!), OK price on trade in (they won't honor KBB prices). Everything done via email, even out-the-door pricing, so there were no surprises at all when I walked in. I have the Nav/moonroof, k/h stereo (awesome!), bluetooth (just ok quality), ipod interface (a little odd but getting used to it). Hasn't rained here in three months, and of course it did on the way home
Gas mileage is impressive so far, but not too accurate (18-30:). They put nitro in the tires...jury's still out on that, now that we have slightly cooler temps. Not sure what else to add...ask me!

PS: this is Subie #5 for me!!! I've averaged ab 95k miles on the first 4!

Good to hear from you, Karen. Which 5 have you had?
I know there's a Forester and a Tribeca among them, right?
Congrats and stick around to let us know how you like it!

I've used Truecar before and it is for real. The car my wife was interested in was a Rav4 4x4 LTD. Nobody in my area could touch the deal shown on Truecar so I sent the email and the dealership that responded was 3 hours away. It took him some time to find the color we wanted and when he did, it had a few other options on it. The price was the same as when you added the options on the truecar website. We could have waited till another was found without those options but most of the ltd's were being shipped with them. Also when he "found" it, it was in route from the factory to a dealership in the next state. So it worked out for us.

Hi, AJ! Great to hear from you! I traded my beloved '06 Tribeca for the newest OB. #1 was a white '92 Legacy, #2 was a red '99 Forester, #3 was an '05 OB (but alas too small, no leg room) which I traded a year later for #4, the '06 Tribeca. The new OB (#5
) has as much leg room and almost as much cargo space as the 'Beca, plus I can finally get away from premium gas and have bigger tank to boot. Got 27.6 mpg on a recent first trip to the mountains, including switchbacks, etc., no freeways, but paved roads all the way. Totally impressed with the smooth ride, too!
Happy Trails!

Hi Karen, great to hear from you again—and congrats on the new ride.
Don't know if you have an iPhone, but if you do I'd be interesting in knowing as to whether your phonebook will upload on to the Bluetooth. In the past you couldn't do it with Subaru, however, I just drove the all-new '12 Impreza with NAV/Bluetooth, and was able to do so. So I'm wondering if this upgrade also made its way over to the '12 Legacys and Outbacks with NAV/Bluetooth.

Hi, again, Bob. Great to hear from you, too. I have messed with the phonebook a bit (I have an iPhone 4) but haven't figured it out yet. The instruction manual is ungodly complicated, but I have a few tricks I haven't tried yet. I'll work on that this week
