Just picked up my 2010 Outback--MSRP $30974, paid $28542 plus a bs $75 processing fee. Car is real nice-I found power to be adequate, averaging over 25 mpg with mixed city/highway driving. Interior is very spacious, I think more passenger room than my 2009 Mercedes E350, especially rear seat. Only complaints so far are outside mirrors and roof rack is not the most convenient. Wish they would offer more exterior/interior color combos. Satellite radio and IPOD integration should be standard. I will start shopping for Subaru warranty-I want to keep this car for a long time.

I've been shopping for both 2.5 base and 2.5 premium+weather pkg.. best deal so far was 23.2 and 24.9 respectively including dest charge. Tax, title and $99 fee doc fee are all going to be extra.
Is this a decent deal? Looks like they quoted the cars at an invoice price.. any way to get 2% off of that besides joining VIP and waiting 6 months?

May as well compare your quotes to fitzmall.com.
They're no-haggle so there's a quick and easy price reference to compare.
#2569 of 3414 "Dealer Invoice" -- different
by ridge8

I have recently been told that the "dealer invoice" is different and higher in New England than other parts of the country.
Specifically, the invoice for an Outback Premium (PZEV required) supposedly is $360 higher for a New England dealer than indicated by Edmonds.
This developed as I ordered a car under VIP program (been a member of one of the organizations for many years), and got an unpleasant surprise with the $360 greater dealer amount.
Any comments? Anybody able to confirm the higher New England invoice?
Thanks for all responses.

Thanks, but that's not the point.
The dealer invoice is supposed to be $360 higher WITH the inclusion of PZEV in both comparative cases -- if the invoice is for a New England dealer.
Ex : NY & NJ also require PZEV, but they don't get cars delivered by the same distributor as New England dealers do.

It is true. When you buy a Soob in NE you buy from Subaru of NE, not SOA. Ernie Boch (Ernie Boch Jr. now) IS SoNE, and many, many years ago he took a chance on the import rights when no one else would touch the brand. For that he got lifetime exclusive rights for all Subarus sold in NE, they all come through him. He buys from SOA so he is the middle-man and gets paid for it. He chooses the distribution of vehicles that the dealers draw from by ordering from SOA 6 months in advance, so if the demand shifts it takes 6 months for any real change in what is available to transpire. If you order a vehicle it has to come from that 6 month allocation. If what you want isn't in the allocation already you won't get it until his next order from SOA. For the last 6 months he chose practically no 3.6 Outbacks which is why they are so scarce in NE. (They have been scarce elsewhere because of a similar thought process to his, heavy on the 4 cyl, very, very light on the 6, but in that case an ordered "sold" vehicle is available based on SOA's priorities not SoNEs).
The invoice prices are higher, and also he gets 1% of the 3% holdback for the vehicle. This gives the dealer less profit to deal with. It is not as bad as it was a couple of decades ago when he used to add all kinds of useless options to every vehicle as soon as they came into his hands, and the only choice you had was to take the price or leave it.
Ernie rolled the dice and it paid off handsomely for him, and because of that we pay a little more than everyone else. There is a LOT of wealth in the Boch empire and much of that is due to the chance he took on Subaru.

It may very well be that the distributor tacks on additional cost to the dealers. As a result, dealer invoice is $360 higher than actual. I have heard a similar lamentation regarding Toyota in the southeast.

Yep, Sienna shoppers complain they can't find certain models at all in different regions that are abundant elsewhere. Strange.
