Just for reference, I sold my 98 Forester L with 78k miles for $5550, and people thought I did well getting that much. The price does sound a tad high. The Outback cost maybe a grand or two more when new, so figure $6-7 grand is all the money on that car. |

Replying to: paisan (Sep 16, 2007 8:36 am) '98 is two years newer and about the same mileage as this '96 was, so I could see paying 6500-7000 for it up here in Alaska. Since it is with a dealer, you might get stuck paying a bit of a markup. 10,000 KBB?! I keep falling back to thinking it must be a Limited (leather seats, dual moonroof, etc). Maybe not, though. If the headgaskets and transmission are in good order, the car should serve you well. Do not pay too much heed to the "I could sell it for..." nonsense. Figure out how much it is worth to you, offer that, and if the dealer can get more for it, it will be sold to someone else. If not, he will come groveling back to you.

I'm in negotiation for a 2006 outback, previous owner some rental company so the dealer got it at auction. The dealer buys a LOT of cars this way from what I can see. I assume therefore that they pay rather less than the $17900 blue book trade in value and am basing my offer on an $18000 base price. I'm a cash buyer with no trade in. Is this unreasonable - is there anywhere I can look up auction price comparables?

They guy at a local place did what I mentioned above and it showed about 9 numbers for this model, ranging from 19,100 to 19,700. This was back in April (in Alaska).
