I know you are looking for something with easier access to the back seat.... but, I think you'll miss the MINI, if you go for a WRX...

I will miss the Mini no matter what. Little choice. The "bundle of joy" pretty much demands something with rear seat access. I know I can get by for 10-11 months more but my wife would like it if we had two cars that could be used for family outings.

The Rex will never be a Mini but sometimes you gotta take what'll work.

You also gain AWD, but I think the 2009 comes with summer tires so don't use that as too much of a selling point.

I live in San Diego - AWD is about as useful here as storm windows on a house.

Juice, maybe you can clarify something - the Suby sales guy told me the WRX is FWD-biased until there is slip. I know the STI is RWD biased and I thought all over Subys are 50/50, Scary thing - the guy said he used to be a service advisor for them and just became a salesperson.

Manual tranny Subies, except the STI, are 50/50 in terms of front/rear power split. The STI has a default, which can be changed by the driver, of 41/59 I believe. The 4EAT equipped Subies have a FWD-biased AWD.

This was a manual. Weird that SA wouldn't know that...

He probably sells a lot of automatics..

Only the sticks have the 50/50 split..

I have to say, that the handling part of the AWD system surprised me (in a good way).. Unfortunately, my Impreza has crappy tires and a not that great suspension... But, the steering/power inputs are pretty darn good!

Yeah, he probably sells more automatic Imprezas.

Most WRXs are manuals, though, so he should have known better.

It's 50/50 by default, and a fluid-filled viscous coupling will lock up temporarily when the front and rear axles spin at different rates.

My 98 Forester had that system. It *definitely* does not feel like FWD, not at all. In fact more people complain that they are tail happy, vs. a FWD feel, or torque steer, or any FWD related traits.

Gun it in the snow, and the tail will slip out, the VC acts and shifts power to the front wheels, which pulls you out of the skid. Stay on the gas, and if you're good, you can get the tail to wag in the other direction, as power cycles back to the rear axle.

Let's just say I had a LOT of fun in the snow with my Forester.

Another thing you'll notice - the tires wear more evenly. Usually the fronts wear a lot faster.

Actually Juice, for '09 all WRXs are manuals. If you want an Auto you have to get a GT.

And Yes, Subarus are fun in the snow. And Dirt. And rain. And Sun.

That's right, they changed the model name.
