I think it is a *good* sign that the carfax is clean and especially that it was bought from the same dealer. A car is more likely to cross state lines if they're trying to "wash" a title from a damaged car.

That the same dealer is selling it means it was indeed a trade-in.

I have unpainted bumpers, and for what it's worth, I love them! They bounce back to shape after small bumps, and no repainting is needed. Basically, they work.

My Forester is now 8 years old, and we still rely on it all the time. I would not take my 2 kids in it if I didn't think so.

In fact, when it was time to buy a new car, I did not sell my Forester, I kept it and bought a Miata instead, so I now have 2 cars.

Remember, though, YOU are the one that has to like it. Did you enjoy the test drive? Were you smiling at the end of it? Life is short, so pick something you like.

That is a fabulous deal, so decide soon, before I buy it from under you.

BUYING A USED FORESTER - 1999 by mosquito1

My husband and I have driven 3 Subaru wagons to their demise - a 1983, a 1987, and just this week our beloved 1992 Legacy wagon. The '92 has lost it's transmission at 140,000 miles - too costly to repair. Now we are searching for a used Forester. I found a 1999 with only 21,000 miles on it. It is at a dealer in St. Paul, MN. The car came to MN from CO in 2002 with 12,000 miles on it so was only driven 8000 miles in 3 years. The dealer told me that Subaru covered the cost to remove the engine and do a piston repair. The car is now all reconditioned and ready to sell for $11,990. In my mind, this could either be a great deal or a lemon. What questions should I ask before taking it for a test drive?

Low miles by ateixeira

I think that would be a pretty big risk. A car with low miles means it probably sat a lot, and that's almost worse than one with high mileage that was used and taken care of.

You want the lubricants circulating, not sitting, whether it's the engine, tranny, differentials, or even the A/C. Test the A/C to see if it even works.

$12 grand it way too high regardless of the low miles. The 06s are out so that is 8 years old now!

For reference, I bought my Miata used, 8 years old, with 26k miles. I paid $7800, and the Miata cost about $25k new, probably more than that Forester. Book value was $11,400, so I got a good deal, but that Forester ought to be closer to $10-11 grand or so given the age.

And this was a car with no engine repair history, with one pervious owner that had a very short commute.

I just think the price is high.

Thanks for the advice. I do plan to negotiate the price down. I see you are in Brazil. AWD cars sell higher in MN because need them in snow. Especially this time of year. I am also looking at used Outbacks.

That's way too high... an 04 XS only cost about $22k new!

Factory warranties are fully transfereable as are Subaru extended warranties. If buying from a dealer, only buy one backed by Subaru (anything else isn't worth the paper it's written on).

Try using Autotrader to locate a deal on an XS...you should find several under $20K.

Look for about 20% off the final price of a new model, so I'd want one for about $18k or so.

That would be for a plain 04 XS I purchased a 04 XS Prem Pack with leather and options MSRP was $27,010 invoice was $24,500 Purchased it for $23,500 with 1.9%. Your right he should be able to pick up a used one for 19,000 or less area depending on options package.
