It's not the exact same model (different transmission), but FWIW, Jones Junction Subaru (in Bel Air, MD) has an 2007 Urban Grey Sports 2.5XT with AT - MSRP $29,457 ($27,569 invoice) offered on its website at $23,969, i.e., $3600 below invoice ($5506 below MSRP), so you might be able to get the price down on the one you're looking at even more. OTOH, the demand for an XT with an AT might be less, so the dealer is trying harder to move it.

I saw it in their showroom on Saturday -- looks sharp!

Yeah, that's a pretty good deal on the '07. They've probably got a few hundred more they COULD drop.

The downsides of that deal are that when the '09 comes out in 2 months it'll be a 2-year-old Forester in an old bodystyle, and it's either been sitting a long time on the lot, or has been test driven a lot, neither of which is ideal. In that same 2-month timeframe, you'll probably be able to get pretty darn close to that same price on an '08 with the stuff you like.

If you're patient, wait a couple months for a sweet deal on the '08 you REALLY want. If you've gotta have it now, see if the dealer will drop another $500 on the '07, and let 'em know that YOU know it's gonna be a 2-year-old model very soon.

My recommendation would be for patience, but either way, you'll be paying a very good price for a very good vehicle.

Also FYI (I don't know where you live, so this may be irrelevant), I found a used 2007 Urban Grey Sports 2.5XT 5sd with 8,622 miles listed for $19,995 by a Lancaster County, PA dealer:

My bad - the used Forester I linked in my post above isn't an XT - I should have picked up on that right away.

Meanwhile, I haven't figured out how to edit (or whether one can), so that's why I'm adding this. Ah, now I see that one can edit only within 30 minutes of posting. So I was too late . . .

Subaru Forester 2008 2.5x Manual for $18,660 by longhorn5

I am in Austin, Texas. I have always been interested in getting a Forester. TMV on Edmund's is: $21,060. I haven't talked to the dealer yet but this is the deal they are advertising. I like manual shift. What do you all think about it? $18,660 includes destination charges but not taxes or documentation. Here is a link to the dealer. Forester deal is at the end of the page.

Thanks for the input. Yeah, i think i'm going to end up waiting. I saw them side by side and I like the looks of the '08 Sports XT much better. With the '09 being introduced in Detroit, and an outgoing body style (i like the current better), I figure they'll be offering better deals too. The manuals are harder to come by, which is why I was initially interested.

Longhorn - That $18,660 price is $500 below invoice before the $1500 rebate is applied, which is pretty good. You may be able to eke out a few hundred bucks more from the dealer, but it's already a nice deal.

Under $19k for a top-notch AWD utility vehicle with good power and handling and great reliability is pretty amazing, when you stop & think about it!

I've seen the automatic advertised here in San Antonio for $18,999 if that's of any help to you.

2008 Forester Premium MT5 / CA package
$22607 invoice

With a week or so of back and forth email between dealers I went from invoice, to -600$, and finally to -1k$ for:

$21600 base price
  - $500 rebate
  - $500 trade in
$20600 + tax&reg&etc.
(beating TMV by $1300)

The only garbage fee in there was the "document fee" but at sub $30 I didn't bother.
Trade-in on my 1990 Integra was only $500 -- but I know its issues and that was the magic number I'd come up with (basically what I'd get from CA to take it off the road and slightly more than I'd net with a donation.)

I doubt this price would ever happen on an automatic. What I knew once I drove a few MTs is that the odometers were basically 0. When it came to price matching, my closer dealer matched -600$ without a squeak -- which told me there was some more wiggle room. I'll be a little sad if Subaru ups the rebate to $1k on 2/1 -- but not that sad.

This was from Capitol Subaru in San Jose, CA. They pitched a good price initially, and were straightforward in their email. (Other dealers I emailed with said things like "what can I do to make you a buyer now" (while not beating my offer) -- uh what is this the 1950s?)

The other thing I learned in the shopping is that they REALLY want to sell the 2007s. I might have gone that route, but didn't like the color.
