Small world -- I bought from Liberty as well. I won't post my final thoughts until I actually take delivery, but I've been very happy with the experience so far.

The procedure/price that you describe sounds right, although I can't say for sure (I'm keeping the plates of the car I'm trading in). I think this is one of the few situations where a $90 doc fee is warranted -- I believe NJ dealers probably aren't connected to the computerized NY registration/title system and have to pay a real, live human being to run stuff back and forth.

The curiosity is killing me, though -- would you mind telling us the name of the dealer who's claiming there's a $500 surcharge on an out-of-state vehicle?

So now I'm curious, are you guys able to buy vehicles that meet NY emissions requirements? Is there any sort of test the vehicles have to pass when you get or renew your registration? Is the requirement only on vehicles sold in NY?

I don't know the answer to this. I'll ask the dealer if their cars are configured to meet NY standards.

You don't have to have an emissions test in NY for any car two model-years old or younger, and your registration isn't tied to your emissions test, your inspection certificate is.

I checked with the dealer, they told me that all of their cars meet the NY emission requirement. I hope that is true. As for your question about which dealer told me the extra cross state surcharge, I am not sure if it is ok to release a specific dealer name, so I will just say it is one of the dealers in westchester county.

From what I can tell, NY won't match CA's ultra-high emissions standards until 2011. And border states are allowed to sell vehicles that meet the more stringent standards of a neighboring state.

There are some really interesting maps here that show which type of engine is sold in what territory.

Taken straight from Edmunds -- "You may include the dealership name, city, and state in your post. Please do not post names of salespeople, telephone numbers, email addresses or other contact information."

I hope that you'll share the name, and I hope that you called them out for their disgraceful behavior!

Hi, I am interested in buying a 07 Forester Prem. pack either auto or manual.. Was looking a NJ dealers.. does the Liberty dealer have a good selection.. or did you have to order and / or do a dealer swap? if you don't mind me asking what was the price that sealed the deal. Thanks for any input..I am ready buy before end of yr.

dom06,

Sorry for the confusion -- I am buying a Legacy at Liberty, not a Forester.

I quickly checked their site -- they have 20 Premiums in stock, including 6 manuals and at least one in every color.

I found their pricing to be very competitive, and more importantly, I bought for the same price we agreed upon on the phone. I had a couple of other dealers agree to a price and then renege on it when I showed up in person.

I bought my 2001 Forester at Liberty and had no complaints with the sales experience. We wound up buying our two Outbacks at Kolb Subaru in Orangeburg, NY, due to their proximity to work. Great experiences there, also. They both have large selections and a fair amount of 5 speed manuals, if that makes a difference. Both are Subaru exclusive, so they don't sell or service anything else. I don't think you can go wrong at either dealership.

I hope this helps.

Greetings. Am purchasing a 2007 XT this weekend and am on the homestretch with a couple dealers who have comparable deals. However, one car has the security shock sensor installed which I don't really need/want. Is it possible to deactivate/silence the siren? Thanks.
