Well, looks like the Forester's rebates stayed the same for December... still $500 for X Premium.

buying car from your boundary states, is there any additional surcharges? by lucyliu

I have a new question regarding buying a new car from other state. Is there any additional surcharges from your local DMV? I live in NY, but want to buy a car from NJ (since they gave me the best offer). Now, my NY dealer told me that there is an additional $500 charge to buy from NJ and to get NY license, but when I checked with my NJ dealer, they said the only other fee is $90 document fee. I am not sure who to believe. Anybody has the experience of buying car from other states? Thank you very much!

Unless there's some sort of massive misunderstanding, the NY dealer is lying to you. The NJ dealer can register and title the car in NY and get your plates at the same exact cost as the NY dealer. The only thing the NJ can't do is have the vehicle inspected for you. You'll get a temporary sticker and you'll need to have a NY inspection done within ten days of taking delivery. That costs $37 if you live in the NYC area.

I just purchased a car in NJ and I'm taking delivery on Saturday. Which dealers are you working with?

I bought my Forester in VA and live in MD, they charged me no such fees.

Thank you so much for your reply -- that is very helpful! I live in Westchester county, just north of NYC. We are buying a car from Liberty Subura in Oradell, NJ. They told us that we'll have a temporary plate when we take delivery, and they will apply a NY license for us ($160 approximately) and mailed to us. Per your suggestion, we'll then do an inspection after we get the car, and that should be set. Sounds right? thanks

Small world -- I bought from Liberty as well. I won't post my final thoughts until I actually take delivery, but I've been very happy with the experience so far.

The procedure/price that you describe sounds right, although I can't say for sure (I'm keeping the plates of the car I'm trading in). I think this is one of the few situations where a $90 doc fee is warranted -- I believe NJ dealers probably aren't connected to the computerized NY registration/title system and have to pay a real, live human being to run stuff back and forth.

The curiosity is killing me, though -- would you mind telling us the name of the dealer who's claiming there's a $500 surcharge on an out-of-state vehicle?

So now I'm curious, are you guys able to buy vehicles that meet NY emissions requirements? Is there any sort of test the vehicles have to pass when you get or renew your registration? Is the requirement only on vehicles sold in NY?

I don't know the answer to this. I'll ask the dealer if their cars are configured to meet NY standards.

You don't have to have an emissions test in NY for any car two model-years old or younger, and your registration isn't tied to your emissions test, your inspection certificate is.

I checked with the dealer, they told me that all of their cars meet the NY emission requirement. I hope that is true. As for your question about which dealer told me the extra cross state surcharge, I am not sure if it is ok to release a specific dealer name, so I will just say it is one of the dealers in westchester county.

From what I can tell, NY won't match CA's ultra-high emissions standards until 2011. And border states are allowed to sell vehicles that meet the more stringent standards of a neighboring state.

There are some really interesting maps here that show which type of engine is sold in what territory.

Taken straight from Edmunds -- "You may include the dealership name, city, and state in your post. Please do not post names of salespeople, telephone numbers, email addresses or other contact information."

I hope that you'll share the name, and I hope that you called them out for their disgraceful behavior!
