Some call it a document fee. Mine was 99 bucks. It is just a fee and can easily be waived but generally a hundred bucks is fair.

Nowadays just about every dealer charges one. Just include it in your final price comparison. Or ask them for an "out the door" price with tax and all, then compare those.

Hi everyone,

I am trying to buy a 2007 X.P.P, the quote I got is $24000 +tax +license, this doesn't include the $500 rebate. I am in north of NYC. How is this price?

Thank you very much!

Assuming there are no options adding to the price, invoice (incl. destination) on X Premium AT w/NY emissions requirement is about $23,800, minus rebate = $23,300. I'd set that price as a maximum, and you could probably do a little better. Dealer will still make plenty on any factory-to-dealer incentives and on the dealer holdback from Subaru. Best method is to get online price quotes from multiple dealers. Tell them what you're shooting for (maybe $23,000?) and see what response you get.

To give you another idea for ballpark pricing, Fitzmall in MD has Forester X Premiums w/AT for as low as about $22,500. Add another $200 for NY emissions, and you've got about $22,700, which is probably as low as you could go.

On the other hand, if the dealership you're currently dealing with is one you know and trust, their $24k price is certainly fair... paying a few extra dollars is worth it if you've found an honest dealership that gives you good service.

I'd also wait a few days 'til the December incentives come out. The rebate is $500 now, and I think it has a good chance of increasing as Subaru tries a final push to eke out an annual sales record here in the US.

Have fun shopping and let us know how you do!

Thank you so much for your suggestion. I took your advice to send email requesting for quotes, and I got some good quotes. For example, one quote I got is $22900, much less than I expected! The only thing is that they claimed the price is only good for today, but it is hard for me to go buying car today. I am hoping that Subaru will have a good incentive for December to keep the price low

The odds are practically nil that the rebate would go away for December. We'll see on Friday whether they went up or stayed the same. Typically for Subaru, the rebates slowly go up throughout the model year, and don't go away or don't go down until a few months after the next year's model is released (summer of '07 for the Forester).

The dealer could only offer you that price for a day because they don't know for sure what change there will be in the incentives, so that's very understandable.

Well, looks like the Forester's rebates stayed the same for December... still $500 for X Premium.

buying car from your boundary states, is there any additional surcharges? by lucyliu

I have a new question regarding buying a new car from other state. Is there any additional surcharges from your local DMV? I live in NY, but want to buy a car from NJ (since they gave me the best offer). Now, my NY dealer told me that there is an additional $500 charge to buy from NJ and to get NY license, but when I checked with my NJ dealer, they said the only other fee is $90 document fee. I am not sure who to believe. Anybody has the experience of buying car from other states? Thank you very much!

Unless there's some sort of massive misunderstanding, the NY dealer is lying to you. The NJ dealer can register and title the car in NY and get your plates at the same exact cost as the NY dealer. The only thing the NJ can't do is have the vehicle inspected for you. You'll get a temporary sticker and you'll need to have a NY inspection done within ten days of taking delivery. That costs $37 if you live in the NYC area.

I just purchased a car in NJ and I'm taking delivery on Saturday. Which dealers are you working with?

I bought my Forester in VA and live in MD, they charged me no such fees.
