#1273 of 2128 2004 Quest - Nissan buyback? by qltypck

Jun 03, 2005 (8:59 pm)

I have had multiple problems with my Quest from the door rattling to water leaking into the interior. We have had it in over 5 times to fix the water leaks and still have an issue. I went back to the dealer and he made an offer to buy it back and put us in a new 2005 Quest at his cost (family friend so I trust the deal) - but the buyback value is less than I owe and we will end up eating the difference in a higher payment. What would happen instead I go through the Nissan buyback program? Anybody know how long it takes, how much of a pain it is, and how they calculate the buyback amount?

Sorry guys, I realized that the front figure of 1.9 inch was, well, insanely thick. Measured mine and came to conclusion that they meant to say 1.09 inch. Must be an error.
So the only difference in the brakes is the rear rotor being vented disc for the 2005.

#1275 of 2128 Warped Rotors by plashenick

We brought our Quest SL (Sep '04 build) in around 16,000 to Freehold Nissan after pulsing started. They resurfaced rotors - smooth running since. They have always been friendly and helpful, at least I got 1/2 the equation for a happy consumer correct!

DCH is a large outfit so I assume they can afford to be more helpful then other dealers. We have had nearly all the problems you could have; radio (3 times) doors not closing, rattles, etc. And all have been addressed and corrected. They even arranged for multiple loaners.

We are making the pilgrimage from NJ to Florida in 2 weeks, plan to watch the MPG closely.

#1276 of 2128 Tire pressure by famof3kids

Jun 06, 2005 (7:19 pm)

Last fall we had a tire pressure warning alarm go off. I assumed it was due to the lower temps, so, I added air. Then in Feb, same wheel again, so, after reading on this forum of known slow leaks around tire pressure sensors, assumed that was it. Again in May another alarm. So, I took it to the dealer, who is great, and mentioned that it might be a sensor leak.

When I returned to the dealer, I had a large screw that nearly had the head worn off, in that tire. Whoops, that's what I get for assuming problems with the van because of known issues I read here. So, guess caution is always warranted.....ha

BTW, the dealer plugged the tire, performed a state inspection, and gave me a vial of touch up paint, all for $20. Wow!

Tell me about your radio problems. I am taking mine in tomorrow for the AM radio which plays sometimes, and sometimes not. They have already replaced two sections of antenna feed, and now say the head liner must be dropped to replace the long feed to the back.
Was your head liner dropped? Did they get it back in so it looked as good as new?
Thanks in advance for your answer.

#1278 of 2128 Radio Problem by plashenick

Jun 08, 2005 (9:56 am)

I had he problem wherein when turning the radio on we got no sound from any function (CD, AM, FM or DVD). We have the single CD (Clariion). We experienced this from early on (Jan '04) with final resolution in Apr '04. The radio was replaced several times. After threatening legal action at the recommendation of the NJ Attorney General we learned thatthere is a designflaw inthe Clarioon for early '04s that casued the Amp to overcharge and trip its' internal breaker. The only way to reset is to stop the car, turn the car off (including lights) then retart the car - basically a reboot.

The newer design radio (replacement) incoprorates the missing voltage step down to avoid the overcharge. I have read of an issue from a Nissan TSB covering poor AM reception due to the Antennae, but have no first hand knowledge.

I have also experienced the problem of rattling - 2 visits - 2 different dealers - the problem has indeed been fixed - apparently, when I took it in for this problem, I asked the dealer specifically to look up any and all recalls and/or service bulletins and proceed accordingly - they came back finding several voluntary recalls and fixed them all - this included passenger door sliding motor, shift lever knob/safety device, rear door struts/ball joints, rear door actuator, and sliding door "insulation kits" designed TO ELIMINATE THE DAMN RATTLE - all worked. BUT HERE ARE THE PROBLEMS I CONTINUE TO HAVE:

1) first the van is too low and when we went camping last summer, with only a moderate load, the van would scrape massively on every speed bump in the parking lot - not to mention that it regularly scrapes the front bumper against parking lot stops regardless of load carried.

2) the roof rack cannot hold the weight limit prescribed in the owners manual or as per the label on the rack itself (125 pounds - evenly distributed of course) without snapping the tack welds on the support beams under the center of the bow of the roof. The manufactourer says I caused the damage and would not repair it under warranty as the load is supposed to be carried on the rails and not lay upon the roof itself (their excuse) - I think this is BS, cuz we all know that every other car we've had with a rack allowed for weight on the roof, but strapped to and between the larger main rails. Also, I cannot find any note in the manula about this unusual requirement of load placement on the rails only.

3) We had our fuel pump give out after owning the van for only 2 months - then just the other day it would not start for 5 minutes and when it did the fuel guage read empty, despite a full tank of gas. The dealer could find no faults and I am worried that this is likely another fuel pump failure lurking in the wings.

4) the finish on the console around the radio - you know - the matte grainy like finish - well with simple non-abraisive cleaning it rubs off thus revealing the smooth plastic underneath - we had it replaced at dealer expense, but i caution other owners - be very careful as that finish on the column and console is NOT DURABLE.

#1280 of 2128 More problems - some serious?!? by caffienecraver

I have not gotten the amended notice of warranty or the accompanying decal - how do I confirm/get it - also these are problems I have had with the van of late (a 2004 SL model) - can anyone share - does anyone have similar issues - also I just posted a response regarding the rattling door issue - Nissan has indeed found a fix and it works:

Rear rotors are vented on the 04 as well. At least on the Canadian van they are.

Thank you very much for your answer. I had both problems with my radio. The AM side was bad and the dealer replaced two short cables with no help. They then had to lower the head liner this week to replace the long one per the TSB.
I also had the radio to cut off as you described one time. They replaced the radio on this last visit. I got the van back today and it seems like all is well. The mechanic knows me by now because he has worked on this problem a lot for my car. He came out and told me he had replaced another of the short cables, and the long one looked like it had the insulation scraped off and shorted to the metal of the car.
I really like the van, but I liked the size of the 1999 better. The long wheelbase does let the van drag when going into some driveway dips, or over some large bumps. However, the long wheelbase makes the ride wonderful and smooth on the road.
I really appreciate this forum and the people who make constructive posts. I took part of your mail into the dealer today and showed him the evidence of the radio problem. They said they were not aware of that radio problem at all.
I have also had the transmission problem described in the TSB that says the transmission can lock up in the” fail safe” mode. When it does this, it is in third gear and the van will move by racing the engine. Turning the engine off and back on clears the problem. I am not going to have this problem addressed unless I have it happen more often. It has only happened one time in over 15,000 miles. The transmission must be opened to replace the faulty relay. I will wait and see how this turns out over the extended warranty period.
My brakes are also beginning to show signs of disc warping when they get hot descending some of the mountains where I live.
In spite of the problems, I really like the van. This is the 4th Nissan/Mercury Villager I have owned. They have been very serviceable cars, and the dealer has been easy to work with.
Thanks again for your response.
