Replying to: decisions2 (Apr 04, 2008 5:55 pm) When I switch cars with the Evil Wife, she leaves it in the middle. So when I again drive the TL, I initially think it's broken! She still hasn't figured out the memory seats... |

I got an offer today for a Base TL. Option 1 was to go for $32,200 with 2.9% APR for 60 mos. Plus doc fee of $275.50, tax of $2,517 (at 7.75%). Out the door it's $34,992. Option 2 was for $30,200 (by giving me $2,000 cash back), but then to finance it at about 5.5% APR for 60 mos. Plus doc fee of $275.50, tax of $2,362 (at 7.75%). Out the door it's $32, 837. I plan to put $7,000 down. My monthly payments would be $502 for Option 1 and $493 for Option 2. The dealer was pushing me to take the $2,000 cash back and said it was a better deal. However, when I got home and crunched the numbers, Option 1 would be better in the long run as I'll pay $32, 217 over the life of the loan versus $33,385 -- for a difference of $1,168. So why would the dealer tell me to take Option 2, if Option 1 is actually better for me? Any thoughts? Also, how do these deals sound? Could I push him for $2,500 cash back.

Replying to: bkostka (Apr 07, 2008 8:35 pm) Anyway, I believe Option 2 is always better for you because (1) the interest rate difference (%5.5 vs. %2.9) isn't enough to overcome the $2000 cash difference, not to mention tax on this $2000 too and (2) you put down $7000 down payment; thus lessen the effect of 2.9% rate advantage. Good luck.
