Re: dealer says credit score is lower than it really is [caltman] by rekonn

I live in AZ, and back August I visited a local Acura dealership for the first time to test drive a TL. I talked with a salesperson who told me that as long as my credit score was over 710, that I would qualify for the special financing. I wasn't ready to buy yet, but I kept that info in mind.

I used myfico.com to get my credit scores, and all 3 of my scores were over 710, so I thought for sure that I'd get the 4.9% for 5 years. AZ dealerships however, were no longer offering the special financing. So after getting some very competitive price quotes, I decided to make a fun weekend trip, and drove to a dealership in Los Angleles CA this past Saturday.

When I got there however, they ran my Experian score at 685 instead of 713, and told me I'd only qualify for the 5.9% for 5 years. I still bought it, but was annoyed that my Experian score suddenly changed for some reason, and I'd have to pay an extra $800 or so over the 5 years in finance charges.

Monday, I checked my Experian score again, and it was still 713! So, I'm wondering - Do car dealerships use different scores than what's available online? In that case, paying $15 per report is useless. Or, did my dealership run my score, get 713 - but tell me it was 685 in order to squeeze an extra $800 from me?

It's interesting that's this has happened to a couple other people. If anyone else had a similar experience, please post!

Trying to talk to a living being at Experian is impossible, so I'm going to try to call Honda Financing and find out from them what score they got. If they say 685 then I know something's messed up with Experian or MyFico. But if they say 713...

Caltman, what was the price that he originally agreed to? Was that supposed to include the $1000 cash back?

2006 TL offer questions by willmills

Hi,

Dealer offers Invoice price and 4.9% APR (no money down) without protection package on 2006 TL.
For protection package (wheel locks, splashguards and trunk tray) they ask $280.

My questions are:
- Is this a good deal?
- Can they go below the Invoice price at this APR
(thought maybe cause 2007 models are coming in a month they might)
- Should I bargain to include the protection package?

Thanks

Bought two cars at Curry Acura, NY by yraghu77

I am from Rochester, NY. My friend and I went to John Holtz acura to buy Acura TL. He wanted one with Navi and i didn't want the navi. After a couple of trips to the dealer, our final offer was $33,700 for Navi (before TTL and document fees) and $31,700 for the one without navi (before tax and other fees). The dealer DID NOT agree to our amazement although we were buying two cars at the same time.

We were really angry, so we decided to buy in some other city and fortunately came across this forum and noticed the price we offered was way above what everybody else is paying. So we decided to checkout Curry Acura in Scarsdale,NY.
The sales executive was really nice and gave me a quote over phone when i explained to him that i don't want to drive 6 hrs just to get a quote. We finalized the price and both of us are going to pick up our cars this saturday.

Final price $29900 + TTL for my car (Anthracite metallic with EBONY) and $32500 + TTL (Black with EBONY) for my friends car. We are very happy to have saved almost 3000 dollars.

Thank you all for the posts. Keep it coming.

I just called Honda Financial Services customer service line, and got the answer to my question. The rep told me that the scoring method they use is different from what the 3 credit bureaus use, and is harsher. So when the dealership told me my Experian score was 685, that's not entirely true. The 685 is based on my Experian score with some extra Honda specific calculations thrown in.

So, paying to see your FICO scores beforehand is a waste because they don't use those. Unfortunately, the only time you'll find out your Honda FICO score is after you've applied for their credit. 5.9% is still probably the best I could have gotten, I just hate being an uninformed consumer that gets surprised right at the time of purchase.

$31,800 before TTL. 2006/anthracite/ebony/nav. They noted the $1000 marketing incentive on the deal. So it was really around invoice w/destination minus the incentive.
