2006 Legacy 2.5i Fuel Economy by aviboy97

Hey everyone,

I cannot find the fuel economy thread for the Legacy, so I figured I would post here.

I'm looking at a pre-owned 2006 Legacy 2.5i or a 2006 Forester 2.5x for my wife to replace her 2002 Impreza. Both with an automatic transmission. Can anyone tell me what they realistically get for mileage around town and on the highway? Her Impreza is not that great. 25-26 highway, and 18 around town.

Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks.

You'll probably notice about the same thing. The good thing is as an `06 you're already outside of the weird 5000-10000 mile break-in period for the fuel economy, it seems. People will get very low mileage for the six months it seems, then it will gradually increase.

Subaru still has the same engine (2.5 Liter H4) so what you see on their website for the `08's will be accurate.

Since all cars that you mention use the same engine/transmission/drivetrain I suspect the heaviest one will get the worst milage and lightest the best (unless gear ratios are different).
Your Impreza might have the best milage.

We have an 05 Legacy 2.5i auto - readout says we're averaging 25.2 (more or less lifetime).

Isn't the 2.5X a turbo? I'd expect it to be worse.

XT. Both Outback XT and Forester XT are turbocharged.

The readout is based on your trip odo. The max you can do is 10,000 worth of MPG because after that the odo rolls over, heck it might be 1,000 then it rolls over.

On our '06 Legacy we get around 23-24 in town and always over 30 on highway... we've actually been 35mpg on a couple long all-freeway trips where I've been gentle with the accelerator. We've been very pleased to have surpassed the MPG estimates. I'd expect Forester to do slightly worse because of aerodynamics. If you go with Forester, you could take the cross bars off the roof rack to help at least a little.

In fact, I've just looked 'em up and Legacy is rated 23/30 while Forester is 23/28. I think Legacy's aerodynamics help the highway number.

I think Legacy's interior is nicer, it's quieter, ride is better on pavement, and it'd be my choice unless you're taking it into the woods, to trailheads, Forest Service roads, etc. Legacy's a better commuter & urban driver, IMHO, while Forester offers better off-pavement and cargo capability while still being decent all around.

You may have a hard time finding a plain 2.5i Legacy... those were sold primarily to fleets, I believe. The 2.5i SE was essentially the base model instead of the 2.5i. Major standard goodies you wouldn't find on a Forester X include power driver's seat, alloy wheels and moonroof. SE was a very good value. Legacy also has an engine immobilizer to prevent theft. Forester didn't get an immobilizer 'til this year.

They're both very good vehicles. If top criteria is MPG, go w/Legacy. If Forester's MPG is close enough, drive 'em both & see what suits you.

X v XT - I was quoting the OP. Interestingly, for 09, the base is an X.

I didn't know about the 10000 mile rollover on the fuel economy readout. Thanks. ITFM, no doubt. (In the...)

I am willing to assume it is a reasonable estimate of lifetime.
