Scam is probably too strong a word - I would just say that if you aren't buying from the manufacturer, you should only buy what is essentially a promise from a company whose name you know.

Edmunds had recommended an ext warr company before on their website. It went belly up.
The manuf warr is the best choice..See for example,,even after GM and Chrysler are in BK,the US govt has stepped in and will honor their warr. Can u imagine that happening with a 3rd party aftermarket ext warr?
IMHO,,all of these 3rd party warr are scams!!Too many exclusions and headaches!

all good points - but doesn't it depend on who the 3rd party is? If the third party is a name you've naver heard of, the contracts are administered by someone else you've never heard of and also insured by someone you've never heard of - don't buy it!
If the agreement is with a multi-billion dollar company who has their name and reputation at risk like - Zurich, GE, Wachovia, Allstate etc., and like these companies are the marketer, administrator and insurer of the contracts, you are as safe or better than you are with a manufacturers warranty - and you will often pay a lot less for these as they don't necessarily have to be sold by the dealer who adds a huge markup.

U.S Fidelis sounds pretty good. commercial: Two guys with same repair are in shop, one paid $3,500 for a new transmission, the other guy with U.S Fidelis paid "ABSOLUTELY NOTHING". Plus it's endorsed by Randy Wallace the race car guy.

Do a BBB.org search for US Fidelis. They are listed under 4 different names and they also are under investigation by the local Attorney General`s office.
I talked to them on the phone and they are the biggest scam around. You need to pay a deposit of $395 before even seeing the contract. And their prices are 2500-3500...Damn,that`s the price of a used car.And they were willing to cover me without inspection even after telling them out of curiosity that I have a very problematic car and a rebuilt transmission.Go Figure!
Stay away from all these aftermarket 3rd party warr. They are all scams and rip offs.An original manuf ext warr is the best!!!
