What about part time four wheel drive. Why is everything new AWD. I am less concerned about the added weight than about the frictional drag of running the four wheel drive system all of the time. I could be wrong on this, but I do not believe that you can buy a small SUV which is part time four wheel drive, other than maybe the 4runner. Even many of the full size SUVs are going to AWD and then you really pay at the pump. I have a 4x4 Suburban which I have put just over 50,000 miles on. I might have had it in four wheel drive for 100-200 of those miles and that was over four winters in KS and eastern WA.

Buying a Pacifica by lauriecann

I'd first like to thank each of you for your comments. You've been very helpful in my decision to purchase a 2006 Pacifica. Here's my buying experience:

I'm purchasing a 2006 Butane Blue Touring FWD. It's equipped with the following:

1. Rear DVD
2. Moonroof
3. "T" package
4. Traction Control
5. Heated Leather Seats
6. Side airbags

My overall price is 29,650. This price includes taxes and tags. I am a graduate student and was able to get the car at 1% below invoice. This price is also with the $3500 rebate. I'm hoping that I got a good deal! I can't wait to get my car. They're saying that it should be here on the 21st, but I'm not confident since the dealer is saying that they're not certain that it will be there on that day.

Again, thanks for all of your comments. I feel pretty confident in my decision.

Used 2004 Pacifica, need advice by fdubois

I'm looking at a nice 2004 model at the local dealer (Delivered in Sept 03). Its a FWD model, 3rd row seats and only 29K miles. Carfax reports looks good, nothing but minor stuff thats gone wrong, one owner. Dealer will extend bumper to bumper warranty to 39K. Price was just reduced to 16995 from 20995. Its been on the dealer lot since August so they want it gone. What do you all think - I really like the car but worry about the reliability stuff that I see coming up on the boards - wife needs a new car and I'd like something a little nicer than minivan route. I like to do my own work and hate getting away from the V-6 Nissan engine in the Villager and Quests. Sure wish the rear window opened so that I can haul the occaissional piece of lumber and I would prefer bench seats in the middle. Anyways, what do you all think - any tips on initial offer price? I was thinking of offering 16K and going from there (too high?) thanks, Frank

Prices paid on '05 limited by weman27

I am considering a '05 touring w/ moonroof, DVD, 4 heated leather seats and chrome wheels, or a '05 limited with basically the same options but with Nav. as well. The touring is a demo but never titled and has 2K miles on it, is the limited w/ no miles worth the $4-5K differencein price?

The Limited would give you the true Pacifica experience since a lot of the options are standard, like power liftgate and tire pressure monitoring, but you would also be paying for AWD. I have found this to be a good thing, but you may not. The Nav system may seem most of the time to be an unnecessary luxury, but when you get in a situation where it saves the day, you'll be glad you paid the extra for it.

All the options are just more things that can cause problems later. A base 2WD model will be less prone to all the problems you can read about on these Pacifica forums. It will also have better acceleration and gas mileage without the extra weight from AWD and the other options.

In over 44,000 miles, I have had zero problems with any of the options on my Pacifca. When I bought mine, items that are now options were standard. Except for the AWD, the weight of options are insignificant. My AWD averages 18.4 mpg. Sure, 2WD would get a little better mileage, but there hasn't been any problems related to AWD, and I just feel you would be happier with the Limited. I may be wrong, but I think those of us who paid more for our Pacifcas are having fewer problems and enjoy the car more.

I've been through some snowy winters, and never needed AWD, never been stuck with my 2WD. I think if you have good ground clearance, FWD will get you out of all but the most extreme conditions, which rarely occur. I'd rather save the money and not have the complications of AWD for the few times it may be needed, which in my case has been never.

3.5 liter on base FWD by rodut

I agree with bjbird2. Also it's very nice that the new base FWD (2006) has the 3.5 liter engine !!! So the old two valve per cylinder 3.8 liter engine is no more on Pacificas.

Also it's still available without that crappy Stability Control System, which becomes standard on more and more vehicles. Very nice car (sorry ... SUV ... )
